Mother and Daughter Wildflower Finishes

Block of the Month Program· Modern Triangle Quilts· quilt along

27 Jun

Mother and daughter Wildflower finishes at the same time!

We were laughing…

a bit at ourselves and a bit at Bruce Wayne the Weiner Dog,

but mostly at ourselves.

We were just two ladies trying to take a video for Instagram (sometimes you just gotta lean into your quilty nerd self!)

Our mother and daughter Wildflower finishes made us giddy with delight. It was such a pleasure to finish our Wildflower quilts at the exact same time, mother and daughter.

See the "Wildflower" quilt by Rebecca Bryan of Bryan House Quilt

We wanted to mark the occasion with a photo.

Why not also a reel, since Instagram was going the way of videos (for better or worse! Sigh and annoyed side glance).

Fast forward a year later and I just got my Wildflower quilt back from the longarmer (Lilo of Trace Creek Quilting).

Whoopie!

So I had to snap some pics and make a reel with mom.

Ta-daaaaa! Here are the Wildflower finishes blowing in the autumn breeze!

Mother and daughter Wildflower Finishes - Quilt Tops

MoTHER and DaughteR WIldflower and Wildflower

Mine is on the right with blue and peach solids. Mom used blue batiks for hers. Isn’t It cool we finished at the same time? Sorry, still can’t get over that!

Each wildflower is made with 24 equilateral modern triangles from my book, Modern Triangle Quilts. Here’s a pic of one of the wildflowers:

Gosh, that is so pretty. I LOVE triangles! *shocker*

Piecing Wildflower

Wildflower ran as a block of the month program for the Make Modern Triangles Club, back In 2021. This beauty consists of an intense amount of modern triangles, but it is so worth the effort.

After we made all of the 168(!) individual modern triangles, we assembled them into larger triangle units, shown in the photo below.

Wildflower Units

Here’s a pic of six of seven different triangle units. These large triangle units come together to form each wildflower. The only unit not shown is the center wildflower

Believe it or not, the Wildflower quilt is assembled in rows. And then voila, you have a beautiful quilt top.

Alfred the Leonberger is celebrating the moment with us and says “hi”.

He’s the goodest big boy! And man, I am going to miss taking photos with those beautiful trees.

And here she is all quilted, bound and finished! Woot woot!

QUILTING Wildflower

I considered having the Wildflower top custom quilted, but with my recent move I really just needed to keep it simple. Sometimes, we need simple right?

Check out the beautiful quilting!

I couldn’t be happier with the all over quilt design (by Lilo of Trace Creek Quilting). The vine-y design is the perfect nod to the “bouquet” look of the wildflowers. For the thread color, I went with a thread to match the background, which is a “bright” navy (as opposed to a dull navy).

And Bruce Wayne the Weiner Dog didn’t take too long to test out the newly finished quilt. This is the first quilt he officially tested in our new house! Now it feels like home.

Aw, isn’t he cute!? I just love how our fur babies know it’s time to test the new quilt.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed this mini-trunk show!

Wildflower Member Makes

Each month, we post a roundup of member progress photos and “ta da” celebrations! Here’s just a few showcasing some of our lovely members’ Wildflowers:

  • Catch Wendy’s and Zuladawn’s Wildflower finishes
  • Toni B’s marvelous finish
  • Melody’s, Sandy’s, Bonnie’s, and Rosemary’s Wildflowers
  • and Ann U’s prizewinning Wildflower

That’s *just* a taste of the beautiful blocks and finishes from our amazing community of quilters from all over the world!

Want to Make this Quilt?

The Wildflower Block of the Month is just one of our amazing, step-by-step programs inside the Make Modern Triangles Quilt Club.

Each year, I host a “live action” Block of the Month, like Wildflower, where I design a new quilt based on my “Modern Triangle Quilts” book. Together inside our community, we make our quilts triangle by triangle, celebrating each and every quilty moment along the way. At the end of the year, we assemble all of our triangles into our finished modern triangle quilts!

Plus, members have access to the entire library of past BOMs as on demand programs they can work through at their own pace. We have new members and current members starting new projects everyday!

Right now, membership is by invite only, but you can get your invite by watching our free, “Scrappy Whirligig” Class. In the class, I’ll teach you how to make your first “modern” triangle. You’ll get a preview of my teaching style and I’ll show you all the beautiful programs you get access to as a club member.

I don’t know about you, but for me, quilting has n I don’t know about you, but for me, quilting has never been about just making quilts.

It’s about slow mornings, quiet time to myself, creating something with my hands, spending time doing something textile, not scrolling on the internet, spending more time creating and less time consuming...

And I think that’s exactly why so many people are being drawn to quilting today.

You want to get offline, learn something new, and have more quiet time that is just for you and your imagination. ✨

I think we could ALL use more of that in our lives, and if you want to give it a try, I’ve got a free class you can sign up for by commenting ‘FREE’ below. 💕

I’ve taught thousands of quilters over the last de I’ve taught thousands of quilters over the last decade, and I’ve been quilting myself for over 15 years, and this is what I’ve learned. ⬇️

What’s stopping you from quilting isn’t that you don’t want to do it. It’s because you have already convinced yourself of something before even giving it a fair shot.

You’re probably thinking something like...

👉 “I don’t think I’m creative enough.”
👉 “It looks too complicated.”
👉 “I wouldn’t know where to start.”
👉 “I don’t have enough time.”
👉 “What if I spend all that money and I’m terrible at it?”
👉 “I’ve never been good at sewing.”

If any of those thoughts have crossed your mind, can I let you in on a little secret?

Almost every quilter I know started with one of those ideas in their head, including me. 🤫

The beautiful quilts you see today didn’t begin as beautiful quilts, they began as just an idea and a willingness to try.

Nobody sits down at a sewing machine and automatically knows how to quilt.

You learn by just doing it, sewing stitch by stitch, and every time you enter your sewing room, it gets a little bit easier, and you start to enjoy it more and more.

If something has been holding you back from quilting, I invite you to take my free class where you have nothing to lose and so much to gain.

Freezer paper piecing tip number eight is to press every seam right after sewing it.

Don’t wait until later or until all of your blocks are done. Press those seams right away!

It might feel like it slows you down in the moment, but it actually saves you time (and frustration) later.

When you press as you go, your seams stay crisp, and your pieces lay flat, which makes lining everything up so much easier. You’re not fighting bulky seams or trying to “fix” things at the end. 🙌

Plus, pressing helps set the stitches and keeps your fabric from shifting as you build your block.

Think of it as part of the sewing process, not an extra step.

Your blocks will be flatter, sharper, and way more accurate… and your future self will thank you!

MAKE A TEST BLOCK!!! Please, I am begging you. 😅 MAKE A TEST BLOCK!!! Please, I am begging you. 😅

You’d think after 15 years of quilting I’d be able to skip it...

And every once in a while I convince myself that I don’t need a test block because I’ve made this block hundreds of times or my freezer paper piecing skills are good enough to skip it...

And do you know what happens every time I convince myself that I don’t need a test block? 🙃

I almost always regret it and end up having a nice long date with Jack The Seam Ripper as a consequence.

Learn from my mistakes so you don’t have to learn from your own and make the test block EVERY TIME!!!

Are you making test blocks? Tell me in the comments! ⤵️

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but we’re nearing I can’t believe I’m saying this, but we’re nearing the final months of Dutch Summer! 🥹

Finished Dutch Summer Month 6 blocks are showing up in the Make Modern Triangles Club every day. We’re past the halfway point, and we’re really starting to stack up the blocks!
