Sparkler BOM Member Makes and More!

Block of the Month Program· Modern Triangle Quilts· quilt along· Sewing with Triangles

17 Aug

Sparkler BOM member makes and more ta-da moments light up August!

Sparkler BOM members are making progress in August on all of the BOM blocks. Whether a Sparkler quilt was started in January or any month since, we know this: progress is progress. And we celebrate every spark of it! From Sparkler BOM blocks to the Spooky Summer Quilt Along, a lot of progress is going on! (See our huge photo gallery below – gah!)

You will also see several finishes from prior BOMs, including Wildflower, Solstice and Stargazer. (shouting out to Toni B. and Sara F.!) Goosebumps.

Sparkler BOM LIVE and ON-Demand DEMOS

By this time in a Make Modern Triangles BOM, I’m feeling like a demo dervish. I create an on-demand video each month that shows members how to freezer paper piece the block, as well as talk through the tricky bits.

Then, two weeks after the new blocks are released, I host a live virtual sew-in where I demo piecing the blocks, field questions and get fantastic tips from members who’ve made them.

I was asked great questions this month, like this one:

“Why are some triangles pieced from the smallest piece to the largest or the other other way around?” (Jenny E.)

Answer: Nested seams! When the blocks are joined with other blocks, the seams are nested and lay flatter.

Members also shared hard-working tips like how to keep track of which fabrics go with each foundation piece:

Chris H. writes the name of the fabric color on the foundation. Gayle K. writes the color name on the foundation with a same-colored pencil or marker. I know, so good!

Kristina S. shared a smack-your-forehead-I-shoulda-thought-of-that tip below.

Lastly, I’m in awe of how members share what they know and what they don’t. We are so much better together because we help each other make progress. Soooo much better.

Proof positive is waiting below with August’s Sparkler BOM member makes and so much more! I’m so stinkin’ proud of you guys!

TA-DAAAAAH! MORE MEMBER QUILT FINISHES

Each month is a celebration and not only Sparkler blocks. Toni B. finished her Wildflower quilt and Sara F. finished her Solstice and Stargazer quilts! What?!

Gayle K. – an ardent freezer paper piecing fan – finished her New York Beauty and won a blue ribbon. Wooooot!

Look at these beauties!

Gayle K. finished a stunning New York Beauty quilt and won a blue ribbon. This one takes the cake…and the pie.

Here’s to Starting and everything in Between

Everyone makes progress in their own ways. We might go back and forth between projects, take a break or even start over. Where and when members start and stop is up to them. I love seeing what new members choose, maybe because I’m reminded about my own creative moments and ta-dahs when I made that-a-one or this-a-one.

And they like choosing where they start. Some members jump into the Sparkler BOM when they join, while others pick a past BOM quilt, bonus blocks or the current Spooky Summer Quilt Along (we’re making Boos & Ghouls quilts!)

SPOOKY SUMMER QUILT ALONG pICS

I introduced the Spooky Summer Quilt Along in July – Boos & Ghouls! I love this little ghost made with modern triangle blocks. I’m sharing their blocks here while our ghosty quilts take shape (yeah, quilt ghosts have a shape. If they are on a quilt.)

You can join in anytime – you can read each week’s post so far on the blog. Spooky good fun! Sign up and get a free coloring page here. Boo-tiful.

SPARKLER BOM MEMBER MAKES! TA-DAAAAH!

Thank you to all our members for sharing your modern triangle progress and ta-da moments!

Beautiful Work All Around! Congratulations, Gayle K. on your Blue Ribbon Win! NY Beauty is on my To Do List. So far, I have made one giant block for the Expansion Pack but have many more cut in White, Ivory, Silver, Gray, and Black with Prints and Solids. I am super thrilled with it this far. Just Love Rebecca’s Classes and Trunk Shows! Thanks for Everything! Jeanette Y.

I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapp I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapped up in a project or wanting to finish by a certain deadline, that we forget to just play. 🙌

Triangle blocks are especially fun for playing with!

Because the same exact blocks can look completely different depending on how you arrange them.

All of a sudden, you’re not just following a pattern anymore, you’re creating something unique. 🪄

And I think that’s where a lot of the joy in quilting lives.

Not in getting it “right” or making it perfect, but in letting yourself be curious.

Letting yourself try something, change it, try something else, and be a little playful instead of precise.

Some of my favorite quilts didn’t come from a perfectly planned layout… 👇

They came from standing at the wall, thinking, “Wait… what if I try it like this instead?” 👀

So if you have a few triangle blocks sitting nearby, take a little time to play with them and see what kind of pattern they end up in.

Comment ‘TRIANGLE’ if you want to take my free class where I teach you how to make a modern triangle, and give you a block pattern to start sewing. 💕

This time of year in the sewing room is always so This time of year in the sewing room is always so lovely.

We FINALLY get to have the windows open, the world outside is getting colorful again, and the extra daylight is a big bonus.

This is my recipe for a PERFECT April sewing day...

✨ Self care: plan meals/snacks for eating right & getting your exercise (booooooo! I know, I know.) Maybe a fun wee treat tho!?

✨ Entertainment: if it’s just you, get your show/ sporting event/ audible, etc. Or if you’re with your quilty buds, you know what to do! Sew, gab, laugh!

✨ Something you’re excited to sew: latest bingeable project at the ready!? Latest fabric stack that arrived in the post? Or...finally get that WIP d.u.n!

✨ Essential responsibilities taken care of: feed the dog, respond to that time-sensitive email, dinner for the fam? Take care of what you must get done so you can check out more completely.

Finally, set a timer for your hard stop time.

I set my alarm for when I need to pick up my kiddos from school. That way, I can get carried away by my creativity and indulge in “me” time!

Shut the laptop, check out, it’s sew time! 🧵 Everything else on your to-do list can wait. It is time for you!

If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s exactly what I’d do: ⬇️

👉 Find a community of quilters to connect with, learn from, and grow with. People who cheer you on, celebrate your blocks, and make you want to keep going!!!

👉 Make it easier on yourself with freezer paper piecing. This technique completely changed my life. I wanted to give up on quilting altogether at one point before I found freezer paper piecing.

It’s not that you don’t finish quilts…

It’s that you don’t have the right support or the right process yet. 🧵✨ Comment ‘FREE’ to take my free class, learn the freezer paper piecing technique, and get invited to join an amazing community. 💕
