We’re shining the Make Modern Triangles member spotlight on Heather O. this week, and boy, does she shine! She describes herself as a modern quilter, but…before you see a single modern quilt, check out her studio with windows on three sides!

Heather said, “I have a studio that is on top of the garage that used to be a porch and I have four large picture windows on three sides of the studio. I basically look out at tree branches. And I get amazing afternoon light in the studio. The sunlight sometimes is brighter than the light on my machine. It is a dedicated sewing space with a cutting table, ironing table, storage, and my machine.”

QUILTING LIKES AND DISLIKES
What do you like about quilting with modern triangles?
It’s far easier than I thought it would be. There are no Y seams and the combinations one can make with just one or two modern triangles seems infinite.

When you joined Make Modern Triangles, what did you want to learn and/or accomplish?
Freezer paper piecing!! I love it.
What do you like most about quilting?
I enjoy choosing a pattern, fabrics, the machine, quilting, and when the binding is done, and the tag is on, that’s the best part.
What do you like least about quilting? Cutting fabric.

What has quilting taught you about yourself?

PROJECTS AND HOBBIES
What is your next quilting project?
I have so many kits and patterns. I don’t really have a next project lined up.

When you aren’t quilting, what other interests do you have?
In my small small vending business I sell capes quilts, and other things fabric at art, fairs, and Renaissance fairs. I also worked full-time as a RN. I am currently remaking my stock of capes with pockets.
Inspiration and Faves
What is your favorite quilt make of all time?
That’s a tough one to answer. My personal quilts are some of my favorites. I think I especially like the sampler quilt. I made that has bright colors on a black background.

How would you describe your fabric stash?
Manageable. I usually buy fabric for a current project and often give away fabric leftovers. (We admire your discipline but could we talk you out of it? You’re making the rest of look like – whisper – hoarders.)
Where do you find inspiration?
The interwebs. The Facebook algorithm knows what I like. And some friends send inspiration too.
Thank you, Heather, for sharing your quilting life and modern quilts with us!
