Celebrating Cosmos Blocks and More!

Block of the Month Program· Modern Triangle Medallion· Modern Triangle Quilts· Uncategorized· work in progress

5 Apr

Celebrating cosmos blocks and more is one of our favorite things to do. We’ve begun making Month 4 blocks already, however, let’s NOT pass up an opportunity to celebrate so much progress.

Members have sewn their Month 3 triangle blocks in many colorways – I can’t believe these are from the SAME quilt design! (you’ll see what I mean in a minute). This month’s block creates stunning rays around the center medallion. EEEEEEEEE!

So while we’re celebrating Cosmos blocks, we’re also highlighting ALL of the progress members made in the past month.

You’ll see a universe of progress followed by a chorus of ta-das!

Celebrating Cosmos Blocks and More!

CELEBRATING COSMOS TEST BLOCKS

Month 3 is when freezer paper piecing feels comfortable as Make Modern Triangles members gain experience and confidence. In fact, I’ll share the ONE lesson that members take to heart: make a test block or two each month.

What many have found out (yes, the harder way!) that making test blocks are worth the time.

When the new block pattern drops each month, we’re itchin’ to get stitchin’! Make a test block…are you kidding me?!

Not so fast there.

Has this happened to you? I didn’t have enough good fabric to finish the quilt because I botched some first blocks along the way. Since we don’t know which blocks may be challenging ahead of time, so without testing, fabric is wasted. Noooooooo!

And if you use solids, you know that making batches from the same fabric bolt keeps the color consistent. Been there, not done THAT.

Why we make test blocks

  • Test blocks “test” your understanding of the block construction
  • Test blocks build confidence when you use the “good” fabric
  • Test blocks find the gaps in your knowledge: such as sewing in the correct order so the seams nest underneath.

Here’s to test blocks…ta-da!

My first test piece!

Celebrating Block 47: Scrappy Whirligig

This fun block is included in my free modern triangle class where I teach freezer paper piecing. Block 47 will be available soon as a mini or large quilt design. Yeah!

Let’s Celebrate cosmos FINISHES and MORE TA-DA’s!

Now it’s time to celebrate even more progress!

TADAAAAAA!

Cindy P. finished her Sparkler BOM quilt top! Congratulations!

Cosmos BOM MONTH 3 MEMBER MAKES!

Now let’s celebrate a galaxy of progress and ta-da moments!

“Ta-Dah! The sew-in video for Cosmos this month was very helpful. Feeling more confident.”
I don’t know if my colors are going to be okay. It will be fun to see at the end.
I’m ready for tomorrow! I can’t decide on the center.

PROGRESS

Some members like Blandyna sewed overtime this past month, making fun progress:

“With 7 weeks away from my sewing room, it was like I’d forgotten how to use a ruler, rotary cutter and the sewing machine itself.”

From the output though, I’d say she remembered it all!

Peggy S. posted photos at each ta-da moment and we could feel her excitement. She is blazing ahead on the Stargazer quilt – see her pics below.

“I can’t believe it. Month 8 done. I am so excited to see the completed project when all the pieces come together.”

Barb M. has been posting her progress on the Sparkler – loads of blocks!

TaDa! Month 3 of Cosmos done!
I can’t believe it. Month 8 done. I am so excited to see the completed project when all the pieces come together.
Finally getting started! *Tada* Month 1 done!
Running a little behind, but here is a picture of months 1 & 2. Not sure of my color choices, but it will definitely be bright!!
“Ta Da” My first ever freezer paper quilt and love it.💕

Month 4 blocks are underway and I can’t wait to see how these fill out the quilt!

Ladies, I am so impressed. I really need to get busy but I have a large quilt that I was free motion quilting and then I am making a hat for a member of my barbershop chorus to wear as she has lost her hair to treatment for pancreatic cancer, Congratulations one and all for a very well done job on your projects.

“Modern” isn’t a strict definition or set of rules “Modern” isn’t a strict definition or set of rules to me... 👇

I started really thinking about what modern quilting meant to me when I was writing my book, Modern Triangle Quilts. 📖

Triangles became my playground.
They gave me a way to create quilts that weren’t symmetrical, but still felt beautifully balanced.
A way to stretch, explore boundaries, and see design a little differently. ✨

For me, that’s what “modern” has always meant.
Not a strict definition.
Not a set of rules.

Just being playful and explorative in your quilting.
Trusting your eye and your own creativity.
And knowing you don’t have to follow every “should” to create something that feels right and beautiful. 🫶

These days, I find myself craving more symmetry again.
So here I am, in my little quilting corner, still working with triangles, just letting them evolve along with me.

I think that’s modern quilting too.

Triangles have a reputation in the quilting world. Triangles have a reputation in the quilting world. 😅

And for years, I watched quilters feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to even begin when it comes to triangles.

After a decade of teaching and helping over 5,000 quilters, I realized the problem wasn’t you.

It was the lack of a clear, joyful system that felt doable and repeatable.

So I created the Modern Triangle Kaleidoscope system, a way to make modern quilting feel approachable, satisfying, and actually fun.

This class isn’t about perfection.
It’s about gaining confidence, clarity, and enjoying every step of the process. ✨

I’d love to guide you through it. Comment “TRIANGLE” to join me! 💌

You know that special kind of joy that comes from You know that special kind of joy that comes from solving a good puzzle? 🧩

The quiet focus.
The way your brain lights up as pieces start to fit.
That ahhh moment when something suddenly makes sense.

Quilting scratches that exact same itch!

You start with simple pieces.
Triangles. Shapes. Color.
And at first, they feel small and separate...

But month by month, as you keep showing up and stitching just a little at a time, something magical happens. 🪄

Those individual pieces start to click together. Patterns emerge, movement appears, and one day you step back and realize…

“Oh. This is becoming something really beautiful!” 😍

That’s something that I truly love about quilting. It’s part puzzle, part creativity, and part cozy ritual. ✨

You don’t have to sit down for hours at a time or be “in the mood” to create. A few stitches here, a block there, that’s how quilts are made.

If you’re someone who loves:
✨ puzzles
✨ crafts with a little brainpower
✨ projects that unfold slowly and thoughtfully
✨ and that deeply satisfying ta-da moment at the end

Then 2026 might just be your year to fall in love with quilting.

I’ll be over here in my little corner, turning triangles into something magical and cheering you on every step of the way. 💕
