Block of the Month Quilt: Solstice

Block of the Month Program· Modern Triangle Quilts· quilt pattern· Uncategorized

19 Jul

Block of the month quilt, Solstice, is a modern triangle quilt with stylish angles and on trend color palettes. This roundup post features Solstice block of the month quilts from Make Modern Triangles members.

The block of the month program includes 32 video lessons, coloring pages, custom yardage calculator, workbook (download), skill builder videos, preplanned yardage-sized quilts and a project tracker.

MAKING PROGRESS AND CELEBRATING

We’re big on making progress and finishes.

Did you notice how I didn’t say only finishes?

Because life happens and timelines get toasted.

Yet progress is always possible and finishes happen when they happen.

We celebrate both in the Make Modern Triangles Club because no one likes to feel behind and everyone feels good about getting something done. Yes!

Today, we’re celebrating members’ quilts from the Solstice BOM program. As a quilting teacher, I love seeing my students’ progress and finishes.

Introducing Block of the Month Quilt SolsticE

After sewing up a batch of individual blocks, I like to mix them up to see if designs take shape. Man, it’s exciting to see what takes shape and builds out into a quilt. I work in Adobe Illustrator after playing around with the layout and then move on to creating color palettes.

The size options for 4-inch triangles are:

(Did you know you could get start TODAY? Here’s how >>).

He’s guarding my Solstice finish. Good doggie!
  • Uses modern triangle blocks from my book, Modern Triangle Quilts.
  • Offers 8 size options – 4 or 8-inch blocks.
  • Provides 6 preset color options with a yardage calculator for each.
  • Taught members how to freezer paper piece foundation blocks.

How the Solstice BLock of the month Works

PLANNING: Color Palettes, QUILT SIZE and Fabric

I divvied up the block of the month into a 9-part program – think of it quilting in smaller chunks of time, like a monthly to-sew list. Members start with a prep stage that includes:

  • How to print and use templates and foundations.
  • 6 curated colorways – Autumn, Noelle (Winter, but my daughter’s name Is Noelle and I can’t not name it Noelle!), Summer, Spring and a bonus Monochromatic and “Scrap Buster” colorways.
  • Materials Lists for all curated color ways in 2 triangle sizes (8” and 4” triangles)
  • 8 Quilt Sizes to choose from, in either 4 or 8-inch triangles
  • PDF and PNG Coloring Page – download and a tutorial for using ProCreate for iPad
  • Calculating Yardage Worksheet – video lesson

Getting started in SOLSTICE – Month 1

Here’s an example of Solstice Block of the Month resources in Month 1:

  • Introduction and Video
  • Printable Pattern Sheets in the Download section
  • Video Lesson: Making the Equilateral Triangle Trimming Template
  • Video Lesson: Making Units ABCD
  • Video Lesson: Cut Block 23 from Units ABCD

Depending on your skill level, you’ll find helpful Skill Builder Videos if you need them:

  • Making trimming templates
  • Using templates
  • Cutting Strips
  • Cutting strip sets

All of my block of the month programs follow a similar path: Planning and worksheets, prepping materials and video lessson(s). Solstice BOM offers skill building for beginners and opportunities for more experienced quilters to challenge themselves through custom color palettes.

Ta-DAAAA!

First, I’m sharing quilts in the preset colorways – fabric colors (Kona cotton solids) and yardage is already figured out for you.

We’re starting off strong with one of my absolute favorite things about the freezer paper piecing technique.

And it’s that you can reuse your foundations!! I’ve had a foundation that I used 20 or more times... 😅

I know it doesn’t seem possible, but this is proof that it is!

Why make a new foundation for every single block when you just reuse ONE for them all?

That’s the magic of freezer paper piecing. ✨

Small wins. 🧵✨

Not every project has to be a king-sized quilt that takes six months to finish. Sometimes the most joyful sewing happens when you sit down, make something fun in an afternoon, and actually get to enjoy the “ta-da!” moment quickly.

That’s exactly why I’m so excited to be co-hosting the Fast-N-Easy Quilters Paradise Summit this month.

We’ve gathered 30 incredible quilting teachers to share projects that are creative, approachable, and genuinely doable. Think:

👉 Scrappy projects
👉 Gift-able makes
👉 Home décor
👉 Bags
👉 Coasters
👉 Mini quilts
👉 Freezer paper piecing

And so many techniques you can immediately use in your own sewing room. It’s free, it’s online, and it’s packed with inspiration.

It’s like a week-long quilting retreat without leaving your house. 😉

It’s so hard to pick a favorite when you love them all, and they are so unique, but if I HAD to choose, this one would be pretty high on my favorites list! 🤭

If you’ve been around for a while, you know that I am a sucker for a good rainbow color palette, and the white background really makes the colors pop. 🌈

The Aurora has also been one of our most made quilts inside the Make Modern Triangles Club, so I think it’s safe to say that this is a member favorite, too.

Inside my block of the month programs, we go step-by-step with PDFs and video tutorials, so you don’t have to worry about missing a thing.

And yes, even a brand-new quilter can follow along and make this quilt! If you want to make your very own Aurora, comment ‘AURORA’ below and I’ll send you the details! 💌

I can’t believe I’m even saying this. 🫣 I have ha I can’t believe I’m even saying this. 🫣

I have had messages from people claiming that my designs and quilts are AI-generated.

In a world full of AI these days, I get that we have to be skeptical and diligent. But we can also credit and appreciate artists and creators who do amazing work.

It’s not fair to artists and creators to simply assume that something is AI-generated. I spend countless hours on each of my designs, and it takes months of days spent in the sewing room in my little creative cave to make one of the beautiful, handmade quilts! And beyond all of that, I truly enjoy the process and the journey of it all.

That’s just not something that AI could do.

So I’m here to assure you that none of my patterns or programs are AI-generated, and never will be.

And if you want to join a community quilters that sew together every single month, I invite you to join us in inside the Make Modern Triangles Club and meet all of the amazing quilters inside.

We’re just getting ready to start a brand new block of the month, and i’m really, really excited about this one. ✨

I’ve been teaching quilting for over a decade, and I’ve been teaching quilting for over a decade, and I’ll still remember the first time that I learned this. 👇

It completely changed my quilty life, and I’ve never looked back!

At one point early on in my quilting days, I almost gave it up altogether because I was so frustrated with ripping tiny bits of paper out of my seams.

My fingers hurt, it took forever, and I was over it! I still have unfinished blocks that have paper on them from those days... 😅

And then someone taught me what I have now taught thousands of other quilters, and I fell back in love with it all over again.

You can try for yourself by taking my free class and see how you like it!

I’ll die on this hill... 👇 Quilting is not just a I’ll die on this hill... 👇

Quilting is not just about making something beautiful.

It’s about making time for yourself.

And that act of making time for yourself is something that you have to do. It’s essential. And above all, you deserve it! 👏

No one is going to make the time for you. You have to prioritize time for yourself to play and explore your creativity.

What’s the quilting hill that you will die on? Share in the comments! ⬇️
