QUILTING Faves and NOT-so-FAVES
What is your favorite quilt make of all time?
My favorite quilt is a mixture of piecing and appliqué. It’s a theme I love to depict: a homeland garden – my mom planted gardens and I quilt them!
What are your favorite parts of quilting?
Making it my own by adding tidbits of appliqué to enhance the design.
What are your least favorite parts of quilting?
Cutting fabric.
Member Spotlight on Learning
When you joined Make Modern Triangles, what did you want to learn and/or accomplish?
I was attracted to Rebecca’s colorful, singing, quilts and wondered if I could stretch myself and try this. Paper piecing, though I love the shapes and points, can be tedious and daunting when it comes time to remove the paper!!! I’m ready to give piecing with freezer paper piecing a try!
What has quilting taught you about yourself?
Quilting has taught me I can learn new things at any age and work through those awkward new learning stages! I’ve also learned I get tired of a pattern if it is too repetitive. I find the most joy by finding new fabrics that play well together, and tackling a new technique and watching it unfold.
What do you like about quilting with triangles?
I love the variety of designs and shapes that triangles make possible.
What’s next on your learn-to-do list?
I’ll have to let you know when it pops up on my radar.
What is your next quilting project?
I am working on a paper pieced color wheel, and playing with some AccuQuilt dies and fabric from the charity group.
NAN’s Stash, SEwing Space and INSPIRATION
Describe your fabric stash.
Manageable: I usually buy fabric for a current project and often give away fabric leftovers.
Describe your sewing space and what you like about it.
I have two spaces I use. One, on the dining room table allows me to spread out and feel part of my family. The other is a cozy upstairs space. It is quieter upstairs and more possible to ponder my ideas free of interruptions. When I need exercise, I use both spaces for one session: one for sewing and the other for ironing and cutting!
Do you belong to a quilt guild?
I belong to a charity guild sponsored by the VA in a nearby town. I’m guessing I’ve been involved in our guild for 10 years or so. We meet monthly Sept. thru May and I try to have a completed quilt top each month. Quilts for the guild tend to be more simple than others I try out for family, friends, and myself.
Where do you find inspiration for your quilting?
Some fabrics just need to be shown off in certain ways, magazines, books, new rulers that come with patterns. The list goes on!
When you aren’t quilting, what interests do you enjoy?
I am an avid reader, mostly fantasy at the moment, and I’m very involved in our local ukulele community: groups, classes, and performing.
