Meet one of our Make Modern Triangles members Elana S.!
Every quilting journey – first quilt, favorite quilt and everything in between – is unique. And everyone who joins the club, brings different styles and skills from beginner to advanced. We like to put the spotlight on a member, show off their quilts and celebrate their journey with everyone. You probably have a lot in common with Elana.
Elana describes her quilting style as traditional. When asked what liked about quilting modern triangles as a traditional quilter, she said “I’ve gotten much better using triangles in blocks.”
Her favorite part of quiltmaking is piecing. As you can see, she has pieced a lot of pieces! Her least favorite part of quilting is cutting. We hear you, Elana! I doubt that we’ll ever find a member who loves cutting. (If you do, let us know in the comments, unicorn!)

SEWING SPACE AND PROJECTS
Elana describes her sewing space as “currently crazy”. She says that it spans two rooms to have enough space for everything. “I don’t have the space. “My sewing machine and iron are in my office, but my cutting mat is in a different room. At least the rooms are side by side 🤣.”
Her next quilting projects? “I have two going. I’m making my sister-in-law a wall hanging and I am working on a memory quilt. It is made up from quite a few t-shirts of places we’ve been over the years.”

When Elana isn’t quilting, she enjoys playing piano, jigsaw puzzles, and reading. Not surprised about the jigsaw puzzles because us quilters are problem solvers, are we not?
She especially enjoys making wallhangings. The “pin” quilt below is one of her favorites, “The reason being is all the blocks are crazy blocks where there is no pattern. You make it up as you go along. It was a lot of fun. Also, the fabric is batik which is my favorite.”

More lovely wallhangings…

LEARNING
When she joined Make Modern Triangles, she wanted to “learn paper piecing without needing paper. Creating the templates using wax paper was genius!”
Elana’s first modern triangles were made in the Magic Mini Freezer Paper Piecing Masterclass. Making this a huge step forward into making any of the quilts in the Club.

I’m always interested in what our members would like to learn next. Quilting offers plenty of options, right? Elana would like to get better at machine quilting. “I am a novice when it comes to that.” You’ll get there!
She finds inspiration in her fabric stash, which she says is growing and growing! “When I see a certain fabric I have to have, then I’ll look in quilt stores, online and books to get an idea of patterns. I currently have 3 quilts lined up with the fabrics and patterns to use.”
Which quilt are you most proud of? “The one I’m most proud of is my drunkards path quilt.” If you ask me, piecing curved blocks is a rite of passage! Well done, Elana!

Thank you, Elana for learning with us and sharing your lovely quilts!
