Bryan House Quilts

Cosmos BOM Planning Month

Block of the Month Program· Modern Triangle Quilts· quilt along· Sewing with Triangles

6 Jan

Cosmos BOM is underway in the Bryan House Quilts galaxy!

Big-time planning, folks! Starting with a coloring page, our members put their colored pencils on paper and fingers to screens with AMAZING results.

See more than 50 out-of-this-world Cosmos color palettes below. I’ll also show you more Sparkler and Wildflower finishes – our members’ big ta-da moments!

PLANNING IS PROGRESS

Planning is progress so we take time to play with color palettes, calculate yardage and print foundations.

Some of us, um…(me), like to start sewing immediately. Hand me the fabric so I can GET IT UNDER THE NEEDLE NOW.

Yet, taking time to plan is calming. All the jitters and expectations are eased when we start creating color palettes and choosing fabrics.

As much as I’d like to skip the color choosing part and get to the sewing part (see above), it feels great to approach the whole block of the month thingy with baby steps. Which builds confidence when staring down a modern triangle quilt with LOTS OF TRIANGLES.

So when members start posting coloring pages and fabric pulls, it’s a big confidence boost for EVERYONE;

You’ve got this.

You can do it.

We’re better together.

A modern triangle quilt is soooo doable a step at a time with each other. Our members are stellar!

When you know where you’re going – even when you don’t have all of the skills yet – every step is progress. When I see someone else do something, I’m motivated to jump in to the next step.

THREE COLORWAYS AND COUNTING…

I had so much fun creating the Cosmos colorways. Like stars in the galaxy, color palettes are infinite.

One of my color inspirations was Cosmos, Kona’s 2022 Color of the Year. I went all-out magenta, pinks and oranges with a 3-color palette. I can’t wait to see these sewn up. (See? I’m ready to GO!)

I offer three ready-to-make colorways for Cosmos (color choices – check!) with yardages already calculated, buuuuuuuut many members created their own palettes.

Supernova superstars, right?

Cosmos BOM coloring page in three color palette: pink, magenta and orange.
Cosmos BOM coloring page in a two-color palette: pink and gray blues.
Cosmos BOM coloring page in a one-color palette: blues.

I’d like to think it’s because I give members tools: planning guides with step-by-step instructions, how to use color strategies in modern triangle quilts and a coloring page (pat-pat-pat on the back – hehe).

Well, that’s only a part of it.

When you’ve got the tools, imagination and creativity follow. Color magic happens here because members are daring themselves into new quilting experiences.

I often see members’ posts like “I’ve never done this before but here goes!” and “this is my first triangle quilt and I’m so excited!” They jump in at their own pace, make progress on their schedule and keep daring themselves to make a modern triangle quilt. And then they do!

COSMOS BOM PLANNING MONTH PROGRESS

Making progress is what a quilt BOM program is all about, especially inside Make Modern Triangles. We may be here for different reasons and move at different paces, yet progress is what gives us sparks of joy!

One of the most important things I’ve learned from members is choosing color can frustrate, and even stop us, from making progress.

Will it turn out the way I want?

What if the colors are all wrong?!

That’s why a coloring page is so handy. We give ourselves an entire month to focus on creating a color palette and choosing fabrics that feel just right. Like Goldilocks, when it feels right, ya just know it. And you wanna sew it.

Now it’s your turn to get excited!

See our members’ color palettes for the brand new Cosmos below. Ta-daaaaaaaah!

SPARKLER and WIldflower BOM FINISHES

First, here’s the updated shrine of Sparkler BOM finishes! Aren’t they so beautiful?! Jakki C. took her quilt photo outside – the stained glass effect is stunning!

Jane M. wrote: “I was going to rip apart some squares to fix the point, but then I said ‘oh well’. Enjoyed the class and eveyone’s projects.” I love good enough quilting.

Cosmos BOM PLanning Month – Coloring Pages

Crayons, colored pencils, markers or tablets – choose your tool for color play. Coloring by hand takes longer but is still fun and relaxing. Digital apps like Procreate are faster and oopsies are fixed in a tap. Either way, members begin to visualize their quilts and get EXCITED.

Here’s what our members have done in our planning month. Woohoo!

Make Modern Triangles member Lori W. colored in the Cosmos design with yellows, light teal, purples and orange shown with selected fabrics.
Make Modern Triangles member Lori S. colored in the Cosmos design with bright colors.
Make Modern Triangles member Joyce C. colored in the Cosmos design with yellows, chartreuse and pinks.
Make Modern Triangles member JAB muted blues, reds and grays for a patriotic palette.
Make Modern Triangles member Deann W. colored in the Cosmos design with blues, yellows, and pinks.
Make Modern Triangles member Blandyna W. colored in the Cosmos design with oranges and grees.
Make Modern Triangles member Cathy H. colored in the Cosmos design with greens, reds and browns.
Make Modern Triangles member Lisa H. colored in the Cosmos design with blues, purples and oranges.
Rebecca K., a Make Modern Triangles member colored in the Cosmos design with yellows, green, purples, blues and orange.
Natalie P., a Make Modern Triangles member colored in the Cosmos design with blue and white.

Sue L. used a coloring shortcut: color a section or two versus the whole thing.

Some Make Modern Triangles members make their first blocks in my free class here. The whirligig block is also a bonus project in the Expansion Packs Blocks section for members. I add new blocks when inspiration strikes.

I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapp I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapped up in a project or wanting to finish by a certain deadline, that we forget to just play. 🙌

Triangle blocks are especially fun for playing with!

Because the same exact blocks can look completely different depending on how you arrange them.

All of a sudden, you’re not just following a pattern anymore, you’re creating something unique. 🪄

And I think that’s where a lot of the joy in quilting lives.

Not in getting it “right” or making it perfect, but in letting yourself be curious.

Letting yourself try something, change it, try something else, and be a little playful instead of precise.

Some of my favorite quilts didn’t come from a perfectly planned layout… 👇

They came from standing at the wall, thinking, “Wait… what if I try it like this instead?” 👀

So if you have a few triangle blocks sitting nearby, take a little time to play with them and see what kind of pattern they end up in.

Comment ‘TRIANGLE’ if you want to take my free class where I teach you how to make a modern triangle, and give you a block pattern to start sewing. 💕

This time of year in the sewing room is always so This time of year in the sewing room is always so lovely.

We FINALLY get to have the windows open, the world outside is getting colorful again, and the extra daylight is a big bonus.

This is my recipe for a PERFECT April sewing day...

✨ Self care: plan meals/snacks for eating right & getting your exercise (booooooo! I know, I know.) Maybe a fun wee treat tho!?

✨ Entertainment: if it’s just you, get your show/ sporting event/ audible, etc. Or if you’re with your quilty buds, you know what to do! Sew, gab, laugh!

✨ Something you’re excited to sew: latest bingeable project at the ready!? Latest fabric stack that arrived in the post? Or...finally get that WIP d.u.n!

✨ Essential responsibilities taken care of: feed the dog, respond to that time-sensitive email, dinner for the fam? Take care of what you must get done so you can check out more completely.

Finally, set a timer for your hard stop time.

I set my alarm for when I need to pick up my kiddos from school. That way, I can get carried away by my creativity and indulge in “me” time!

Shut the laptop, check out, it’s sew time! 🧵 Everything else on your to-do list can wait. It is time for you!

If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s exactly what I’d do: ⬇️

👉 Find a community of quilters to connect with, learn from, and grow with. People who cheer you on, celebrate your blocks, and make you want to keep going!!!

👉 Make it easier on yourself with freezer paper piecing. This technique completely changed my life. I wanted to give up on quilting altogether at one point before I found freezer paper piecing.

It’s not that you don’t finish quilts…

It’s that you don’t have the right support or the right process yet. 🧵✨ Comment ‘FREE’ to take my free class, learn the freezer paper piecing technique, and get invited to join an amazing community. 💕

One thing that will NEVER get old with freezer paper piecing... ⬇️

The number of blocks I can sew from just ONE foundation! 🙌

It always amazes me, and it’s one of my favorite things about the technique.

I save so much time not having to make a new foundation for every single block, and that’s not to mention the time saved from not having to rip the paper bits of those foundations out of the seams. ✨

I’m hosting a free class where I teach you this technique, and give you a modern triangle block pattern to start sewing!
