How to make Selvage Quilt Binding

Tutorial· video

9 Nov

Hey guys! In my newest YouTube video, I’m showing you how to make selvage quilt binding. I love making selvage binding because it is such a colorful way to add texture to your binding. Once you feel that selvage binding, you’ll know exactly what I mean. You won’t be able to stop petting your selvage quilt. Ha!

How To Make Selvage Binding

This is an update to a tutorial I made several years ago. It’s one of my favorite tutorials so, I’m updating this tutorial for the video era, but you can go back and read my old selvage tutorials.

Lucky Selvage Medallion, by Rebecca Bryan

This is Lucky, my selvage medallion. I made this sweet baby way back in 2013! So, I’m working on a new selvage quilt, which I showed you last week. I need to accumulate more selvages, so this new selvage quilt might take me a little longer. Ah well, I’m going to enjoy the process. I love a scrappy project as quilty therapy.

Watch the Tutorial:

In this video, you’ll learn how to make continuous strip quilt binding using fabric selvages.

Materials:

To make continuous strip quilt binding using selvages you’ll need:

  • At least one fat quarter of Selvage Fabric
  • Monofilament or coordinating thread
  • A Binding Baby to organize your binding strip
  • You’ll also need something to bind, like a quilt maybe? Ha!

Selvage Quilt Binding Calculator:

So how much selvage quilt binding to you need? Well here’s my general calculation:

Perimeter of your quilt plus 10” for joining divided by 20” = number of selvage strips you’ll need to cut

For example, let’s say you have a 60” x 60” quilt that needs binding. You’ll want to calculate the perimeter, so 4 times 60” = 240”. Add 10” for joining to get 250”. Divide 250” by 20” to get 12.5 strips. So I would cut 13 strips from my fat quarters of selvage fabric. From each fat quarter of selvage fabric you should be able to cut 7 strips. So I would need 2 fat quarters of selvage fabric to get my 13 strips of selvage binding.

I made a few selvage cushions, but I do’nt know if I must stitch them onto a plain background, or glue them onto the background, before I stitch them, and afterwards wash them to remove the glue? then put the batting on

I don’t think you need glue. Are you thinking to baste the selvages in place before stitching?

Also, I have a youtube tutorial about how I make my selvage fabric. Check it out via the link above. 🙂

So very cool and fun! To think I’ve been throwing my selvages away! Well that will change starting right now! Thank you!

Tutorials are great. Just learning to use selvage. Where I joined the selvage binding is super bulky. Any suggestions for reducing that?

This is what makes my programs accessible for even This is what makes my programs accessible for even brand-new quilters: ⬇️

👉 They’re built with Modern Triangles.
Think of them like quilty puzzle pieces. One small shape at a time. Each month you make a set of triangles, and by the end of the year… you’ll suddenly have a quilt that feels like a masterpiece.

👉 You only ever need to focus on the next step.
Not the whole quilt, not the finishing, not how it will look months from now.
Just one block (or triangle!) at a time.

👉 YOU don’t have to do the hard thinking because I’ve already done that for you.
No math, no stress, no guesswork, just clear instructions, support when you need it, and joyful sewing!

Your job is simply to create, enjoy, experiment, and celebrate the “Ta-Da!” moments along the way.

Whether you’ve made 50 quilts or zero, you belong here, and you’ll finish with something you’re really proud of.

I’m not even exaggerating when I say that I probab I’m not even exaggerating when I say that I probably would have saved hundreds of hours if I knew the magic of freezer paper piecing when I first started quilting. 😅

There was a time when I almost gave up quilting altogether because I HATED paper piecing so much, and it took me so long.

Having to sew through your foundations, spend countless hours ripping paper from the seams, having sore fingers, and not even wanting to do it anymore... That’s where I was with the whole paper piecing thing. Ready to just throw in the towel.

And then a friend introduced me to Freezer Paper Piecing, and it changed my life forever. I have never looked back, and now I LOVE paper piecing. 🙌

Instead of tearing paper out of every seam, I could just peel it off… and use it again... and again... and again!

It was like magic. And it still feels like magic every time I do it! 🪄

The Echo was such a fun, unique design that was unlike anything I had made with triangles yet.

It felt bold and different, yet symmetrical. ✨

And of course, made with modern traingles blocks, some were simple, and some were challenging.

But the whole process from start to finish is so much fun! If you want to learn as you go and make your own version of the Echo, comment ‘ECHO’ and I’ll send you the details to my Block of the Month program, where you get ALL the tools, tutorials, and resources to make this quilt! 🫶

All you have to do is pick your color plan, shop your fabric stash, and get ready to start sewing! 🪡
