Dolly Dress Up Blocks

Uncategorized

3 Sep

For a few months now I’ve been working on a dolly dress up quilt for my youngest baby daughter. These dolly dress up blocks are printed; I haven’t appliqued them! They are from two panels from Holly Holderman‘s Dolly Dress Up line. For more details on my previous blocks visit here and here.

I’m happy to say I’ve finished gussying up my dolly dress up blocks. In reality I’ve just chosen to omit 4 blocks, but more on that in a minute.

The last two dollies received pockets stuffed with wee hankies. My grandmother made me a quilt with dollies with pockets. So these pockets were extra fun to make.
Block 5

Here’s a close up. I added some chain stitching on the red cardigan. The pockets are appliqued (needle turned if you’re curious), but then I thought it better to secure it with a top stitch. The quilt is planned for my baby girl and I anticipate it getting loved. And washed. A bunch.    Block detail - pockets

Here’s the second block with pockets. Poppet pockets?! Squueee!
Block 2

Here’s a detail of this poppet’s pockets. Again with the double applique. Block 2 - detail

The emboidered broach on this one is meant to mimic the flowers in the dress. You can kind of see one in the above picture towards the bottom right. Block 2 - detail

I’m stopping with these eight dolly blocks because I’m sticking in my recent comfort zone of red, blue and pink.

Which means there are now four lonely left over blocks.  Does anyone want these orphans? One already has an apron. Left overs If anyone would like them let me know in the comments. I’ll mail them to whomever wants them (caveats: U.S. only, if there are several people interested, I’ll pick a recipient by Friday.).

I’ll be linking up to WIP Wednesday and Sew Cute Tuesday. Thanks for visiting!

How gorgeous. Your daughter is going to really treasure the quilt. I would love to ask for the blocks as I have a niece I sew for who would love them, but unfortunately I live in Europe (although would be happy to pay postage).

Dropping by from Better Off Thread – these blocks are adorable and I think it's a great decision to limit the colours, it would be so easy to simply use them all 🙂

I love these blocks. They are so cute. Anyone would love a quilt with these. I would love to have your extras to put into a quilt for my cousin. She is a clothing designer and these would look great hanging in her studio.

If your freezer paper is not sticking to your fabric, your iron might not be hot enough. 🔥

But be warned... 👇

You don’t want it to be TOO hot either.

Use a HOT dry iron, and that should help your freezer paper stick to your fabric!

The freezer paper needs enough heat to grip the fabric properly.

I also love using a wool pressing mat because it helps hold heat longer and makes the freezer paper stick even better.

When it comes to the quilting techniques, sometimes even a tiny adjustment can make a huge difference. 🙌

Freezer Paper Piecing Tip number ONE! ⬇️ We’re st Freezer Paper Piecing Tip number ONE! ⬇️

We’re starting off strong with one of my absolute favorite things about the freezer paper piecing technique.

And it’s that you can reuse your foundations!! I’ve had a foundation that I used 20 or more times... 😅

I know it doesn’t seem possible, but this is proof that it is!

Why make a new foundation for every single block when you just reuse ONE for them all?

That’s the magic of freezer paper piecing. ✨

You know what I think a lot of quilters need more You know what I think a lot of quilters need more of? 👇

Small wins. 🧵✨

Not every project has to be a king-sized quilt that takes six months to finish. Sometimes the most joyful sewing happens when you sit down, make something fun in an afternoon, and actually get to enjoy the “ta-da!” moment quickly.

That’s exactly why I’m so excited to be co-hosting the Fast-N-Easy Quilters Paradise Summit this month.

We’ve gathered 30 incredible quilting teachers to share projects that are creative, approachable, and genuinely doable. Think:

👉 Scrappy projects
👉 Gift-able makes
👉 Home décor
👉 Bags
👉 Coasters
👉 Mini quilts
👉 Freezer paper piecing

And so many techniques you can immediately use in your own sewing room. It’s free, it’s online, and it’s packed with inspiration.

It’s like a week-long quilting retreat without leaving your house. 😉
