What Are Color Harmonies?

Block of the Month Program· Modern Triangle Quilts· Playful Color· Playful Color Theory

14 May

Color harmonies are Like a chorus, where Colors SING NOTES together in Perfect pitch.

When your quilts lack color harmonies, it’s like a four-part, out-of-tune rendition of Row Row Row Your Boat at summer camp. You know when it sounds bad, but which campers are croaking off key?!

We’ve all done it. Like sewing a bunch of quilt blocks and realizing the colors are off. Or not like you imagined. You’re not sure why or how to fix it.

Ding! Ding! We have a road map to color mastery in the Playful Color Quilt Guild, where color confidence is our goal. We say a big “Yes, please!” to creating colorful quilts with the time, money and love we’ve invested into a beloved hobby.

Recently our Playful Color Quilt Guild members learned how to create color harmonies using a color wheel. Going a step further, they created a personal color palette – colors that make you happy to see them – and used them in color combinations. Then, they took a giant leap around the color wheel with this month’s challenge: Choose a color harmony and make a sample quilt block with your personal color palette.

Get ready for some eye-popping color!

START WITH A Color Wheel

Sir Isaac Newton, inventor of calculus and the law of gravity, also created the color wheel. Thanks to Newton, the first scientist knighted by the Queen of England, choosing colors for your quilt is less guesswork and more fun with a color wheel.

Color harmonies are color combinations based on a color wheel. Commonly known color combinations are primary (red, yellow and blue), complementary (red/green, blue/orange, yellow/violet) and monochromatic (all the same tints and shades of one color); lesser known but equally powerful are analogous, triad, tetrad, split complementary and square.

Bottom line: Choosing colors based on these combinations will make your quilts sing the Hallelujah Chorus or Pharrell Williams’ Happy. Quilts can do that.

Thanks to color wheel inventor Sir Isaac Newton, choosing colors for your quilt is less guesswork and more fun.

OUr members tell the story – Color Harmonies get the glory

Can you identify the color harmonies shown in their beautiful blocks below?

Playful Color Quilt Guild member, Karen S., used four colors and their shades and tints forming a split complementary color harmony.

An analogous color harmony creates movement by using light and dark values of blues, greens and teal.

Color is so much fun – and rewarding – when you’ve got skills. Move over, Napoleon Dynamite.

As you can see, our members got ’em! Color mastery can be learned and eyes can be trained to see colors better. Learn more about how we take you from color muddler to color master here!

Bryan House Quilts was founded by award-winning quilter, author and fabric designer, Rebecca Bryan in 2012. Rebecca experienced a color revolution when she used rainbow colors in her designs, moving her from color muddler to color master. Today she teaches thousands of quilters about choosing color palettes and modern piecing techniques through her courses, books and patterns. Her work is described as fun, modern, playful, classic, and always colorful. Creating a guild of playful color quilters achieved one of her rainbow-colored dreams where quilters are better when they learn and play together.

TODAY is the last chance to get in on the presale TODAY is the last chance to get in on the presale special for the NEW Alchemy block of the month!!! ✨

Sometimes when inspiration hits, you just have to run with it. And that is exactly what I did when I designed and made this quilt, so that I could share another block of the month with you this year!

The Alchemy will be a bit more challenging than my other programs, but with freezer paper piecing being the main technique, it is still totally doable! 🙌

And of course, just like all of my other block of the month programs, you’ll get all the step-by-step instructions and video tutorials to make sure that you succeed. You’ll also get to connect and sew with the entire community to celebrate your progress and get support when you need it!

Comment ‘ALCHEMY’ if you want to get in on the presale before it’s gone! 💕

I always tell people that if you really want to ge I always tell people that if you really want to get started with quilting, you can buy everything that you need at Walmart. 🙌

👉 You don’t need the newest, fanciest sewing machine to get started.
👉 You don’t need to order the latest, high-end fabric to practice with.
👉 You don’t need a bunch of expensive tools to make something beautiful.

And soooo many people don’t know this, but oftentimes local libraries offer sewing machines for rent or for use in the library, so if you want to try quilting without investing in your own machine, it’s a great option to explore to get you started! 🪡

So if you really want to give quilting a shot, head to your nearest supermarket, grab a few affordable fabrics and tools to start with, sign up for my free class, and see if it’s something that you like! Comment ‘FREE’ to sign up for the free class! 💌

Presale for the NEW Alchemy block of the month is Presale for the NEW Alchemy block of the month is LIVE!!! 🌟

I am sooo excited to make this quilt with you, and I can’t wait to see all of the beautiful color and fabric choices that you come up with!!!

If you’ve been around for a while, you know that I LOVE the planning and picking phase of starting a new project.

For a rainbow version of the Alchemy, it turns out we can use fat quarters!

A fat quarter-friendly project just makes choosing fabrics so easy! Fat quarters are like potato chips, you can’t just have one... You simply collect them. 🧐 So if you are anything like me, you already have a stash of fat-quarters that you can choose from!

If you want to get a head start in choosing your own fat quarter rainbow, you will need 12 different rainbow colors, and then you’ll need 2 fat quarters for each color, a light and a bright, for a total of 24 fat quarters. 🌈

Comment ‘ALCHEMY’ to join in on this block of the month program! We start in June. ✨
