Solstice Block of the Month Quilt: Modern and Multi-Sized

Block of the Month Program· Modern Triangle Quilts· Sewing with Triangles

16 Dec

Plus 20 Gorgeous Solstice Quilts Made by Make Modern Triangles Members

Solstice block of the month is a modern triangle quilt with an exciting radial design and four ready-to-make colorways.

The block of the month program includes 32 video lessons, coloring pages, custom yardage calculator, workbook (download), skill builder videos, preplanned yardage, multi-sized quilt design, and a project tracker.

Your mission? Sew four hours a month (perfect for busy quilters) and your Solstice quilt is made this year. Ding! Ding!

At the same time, I’m on a mission: Give my students room to creatively express themselves. Try new ideas and build quilting skills. Make amazing quilts! Solstice has a strong design that holds up well to color changes and tweaks.

So PUH-LEEEEASE change up a color palette.

Make it different-er, prettier, even brighter or traditional. Or change the layout and the colors. You will never “hear me say ‘do it my way’. Because your way turns out pretty spectacular. In this post, see spectacular Solstice block of the month quilts made by Make Modern Triangles members who mixed it up!

If you love to put your own twist on block of the month patterns, the Solstice sky is the limit when making this quilt in your own signature style and colors. Think of these options as just the start, like our members did.

What is the Solstice Block of the Month program?

Solstice BOM at the Winery
Solstice Block of the Month

First, it’s about staying motivated from the first stitch to the last, without getting bored, stuck, and another unfinished project.

Second, it’s about celebrating progress and finishes. Did you notice how I didn’t say only finishes? All members’ progress big and small is reason to celebrate. Everyone feels good about moving forward or getting it done.

Third, it’s about learning new skills like freezer paper piecing, cutting and joining block sets with support and guidance.

Last, it’s about making a beautiful quilt you love!

How Solstice BLock of the month Works

PLANNING: Color Palettes, QUILT SIZE and Fabric

I divvied up the block of the month quilt blocks into a 9-part program, starting with a planning and preparation phase, including:

  • How to print and use templates and foundations.
  • Choose from 6 curated colorways or choose your own colors
  • Shop your stash or purchase fabric yardage – yardage is calculated for you
  • Choice of 2 triangle sizes – 4” and 8” triangles
  • 8 quilt sizes
  • PDF and PNG coloring pages – printable and digital with a Procreate tutorial for iPad
  • Custom yardage calculator

SEWING Monthly QUILT BLOCKS

Members sew a set number of blocks each month – not more than 12 for Solstice – that make a Modern Triangles quilt over 9 months. We make sets of different triangle blocksfor seven months. Then we assemble the quilt blocks and background during the next two months, which may include quilting it yourself.

If a quilt block requires adding new skills, skill builder videos are included in addition to the monthly tutorials.

Even though Solstice block of the month is virtual, you’ll get expert guidance and support from a large community of amazing quilters. Just pop a question into the private community group or send us your question – help is on the way.

NOTE: For those of you already enrolled, you’ll find all this information and more in the Planning Section.

What color will you choose?

Love to follow a preplanned colorway? I’ve got a few to whet your palate (see what I did there?). You’ll find 4 curated colorways: Autumn (the main palette), Noelle, Summer, and Spring.

reset colorways include designated fabric colors in Kona cotton solids – the yardage is already figured out for you.

By the way, much of my color inspirations came directly from my Pinterest Board, “I Heart Color”.

Here’s the main colorway I’ll be working through.

SOLSTICE BLOCK OF THE MONTH – Noelle (WINTER)

I’ve always wanted to make a modern triangles Christmas quilt and I couldn’t resist naming this quilt design after my youngest daughter, Noelle.

I love bright blue! This bright blue and green color palette is perfect for summertime.

SOLSTICE BLOCK OF THE MONTH – Monochromatic

I also put together two stash busting options. The first is a monochromatic color palette and the second uses one background color to feature your favorite stash fabrics.

Monochromatic Colorway

Choose any color and play with value (light to dark) to create your monochromatic color palette. This mock up shows teal (cause I love me some teal!) but this would work with any color. So choose your favorite and go!

SOLSTICE BLOCK OF THE MONTH – Stash Busting FAVORITE FABRICS

Finally, if you need a stash buster for your block of the month, I submit for your consideration the “Stash Buster” mockup. Simply choose a background color and away you go! Let those favorites come out and play.

Personally, I see a background of denim chambray or linen with bright red, Liberty-esque, florals!

DIY Color Palette?

So, obviously I love to use a lot of color in my quilts. You’ll notice that zero backgrounds are white! However, if you don’t like lots of color, I’ve given you tools to make your own version of my quilt design with the a coloring page and a custom yardage calculator.

Start with the coloring page. Get out some colored pencils and play with colors and ideas. For more ideas, see my post Quilt Coloring Pages: 4 Methods for Success.

What size will you CHOOSE?

Then once, you’ve settled on your dream color palette, open the Yardage Calculator Worksheet in the Planning section. In the same section, I’ve included an optional webinar where I show you how to use calculator step-by-step.

As shown, the Solstice quilt below measures 68” x 68” and the center medallion design never changes. You choose among 8 size options from baby to king. Make either 4-inch or 8-inch blocks.

The size options for the 8” triangles are:

  • Medallion 64’’ x 64’”
  • Throw 68’’ x 68’’
  • Queen Materials 90’’ x 90’’
  • King Materials 110’’ x 100’’

The size options for the 4” triangles are:

  • Medallion 32’’ x 32″
  • Baby 36’’ x 42’’
  • Throw 65’’ x 65’’
  • Twin 70’’ x 90’’

Will other color ways be available in the future for the solstice bom?

No, but there’s lots of ways to customize it for the colors you want.

Really pretty. Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2020 is Classic Blue. That blue colorway would fit that perfectly.

I know it’s tempting to skip this step... I cannot tell you how many times I have skipped making a test block and ended up regretting it later. If I had just made the test block, it would have saved me HOURS and HOURS of seam ripping and re-sewing, so take my advice and just always make the test block!

I have never regretted making a test block, but I have regretted not making one. 😅

2️⃣ Celebrate the ta-da moments.

I’m not talking about just the finished quilt. I mean EVERY moment along the journey that feels like a win. Picking your colors and fabrics, sewing that first block, the points that line up, arranging blocks onto the design wall... Celebrate as much as you can along the way.

I think too many quilters rush past these moments because they’re just focused on the finish line, but quilting isn’t one big “ta-da!” It’s a bunch of little “ta-da” moments stitched together.

3️⃣ Learn the freezer paper piecing technique.

I’m not kidding when I say it completely changed my quilty life... The more I quilt, the more I realize that frustration doesn’t make a quilt more valuable. Struggling doesn’t make you a better quilter. A good process gives you more confidence, helps you enjoy the sewing, and frees up a lot of your time to keep quilting. It makes you want to come back tomorrow and sew another block!

Quilting is meant to be enjoyed and there’s so much to learn along the way. These three things have been HUGE along my quilting journey, and I know they can make an impact on yours too.

When I say I’ve tried it all, and quilting was the When I say I’ve tried it all, and quilting was the only thing that stuck, I MEAN IT! 😅

👉 Tried gardening, and all the plants would die before I got around to them.
👉 Tried crochet, and discovered I can’t count that high (or just don’t want to!)
👉 Tried making kids’ clothes, and they always grew out of them before I could finish.

But quilting? THAT’S my bread and butter.

It was my mom who got me into quilting many years ago, and I’ve even been teaching quilting for over a decade.

I’ve built a community of thousands of quilters from all over, at all ages and all skill levels.

And the most important part of what we do is have FUN. 🙌

FREEZER PAPER PIECING TIP NUMBER 3 ⬇️ Always prin FREEZER PAPER PIECING TIP NUMBER 3 ⬇️

Always print your templates at 100% scale. Most printers are accurate, however, the template size may be off by a smidge with some printers.

Make a test print on printer paper. Measure the 1-inch scale box to check accuracy. Run a test when this happens by changing the scale setting a percent at a time, then remeasure the scale box until it’s the same size as the original template. Like I said, it happens, but not often!

Some quilters find that freezer paper shrinks after it runs through a printer. Another reason to check the scale box! You can’t turn down the printer’s temperature, but you can pre-shrink it by pressing it onto parchment paper. Peel it off, and you’re ready to try again.

Even being slightly off can affect the accuracy of your blocks later on.

This is one of those tiny steps that saves a LOT of frustration later. 😅
