Feathered Star Quilt Along {Week 6 – Quilt Top Assembly}

Uncategorized

19 Jul

Hey guys! Welcome to Week 6 of our Feathered Star Quilt Along. My family and I have just landed a few days ago in the USA, after packing up all of our things in The Hague, Netherlands. It’s always amazing to me how tired one is from moving. There’s nothing like “moving tired”. So, please forgive the delay in this post!

Before going any further, I’d like to take a moment to thank last week’s sponsor Doohikey Designs. The winner of the binding baby/flower spindle combo is Anita @55grandma. Congrats! This week’s prize is Curated Quilts, read below for more details.

How to follow along:

You have a few options to follow along:

  • Sign up for the weekly Quilt Along emails by clicking the RSVP button below.
  • Follow along on Instagram using the hashtag #BHQfeatheredstarQAL.
  • Every week, on Wednesday, I’ll be posting a quilt along blog post on my website.

Assemble the Quilt Top

Now that we’ve got all the star blocks made up for our quilt, it’s time to assemble the quilt top. As a refresh, you made 12 blocks for the regular pattern or 9 blocks for the alternative layout. If you are making the regular quilt, follow the directions in the pattern to assemble the quilt top using the star blocks, the border units, and the 4 corner pieces.

Assembly for the Alternate Layout

If you’ve chosen the alternate layout, follow these steps. Before getting started cut and make the following sashing strips:

  • 6 strips 2 1/2” x 18 1/2”
  • 4 strips 2 1/2” x 58 1/2”
  • 2 strips 2 1/2” x 62 1/2”

Also, before you begin decide on your final layout. You’ll have a 3 x 3 array of 9 blocks.

Sew blocks into rows. Make 3 rows.

The first step is to sew the blocks into 3 rows. Each row will have 3 star blocks with a 2 1/2” x 18 1/2” sashing strip in between the stars.

Next, you’ll sew the rows together with the 4 sashing strips 2 1/2” x 58 1/2”. And finally you’ll sew the 2 sashing strips 2 1/2” x 62 1/2” on either side of the quilt top.

Annnnd then you’re finished! The alternate layout will finish at 62 1/2” x 62 1/2”.

This week’s sponsor

This week, Curated Quilts is offering a prize to one lucky participant. The magazine is an elegant showcase of beautiful quilts coupled with rich articles. Thank you Curated Quilts!

We’re going to be doing most of our interaction on Instagram. To enter, post a pic of your cutting process this week on Instagram with the #bhqFeatheredStarQAL. I’ll choose a winner at random next Tuesday!

If you have a question or need help, the quickest way to get an answer from me is to post in my Facebook group “Quilting with Bryan House Quilts“.

Next Week

Next week we’ll wrap up the quilt making by talking through some quilting options.

If your freezer paper is not sticking to your fabric, your iron might not be hot enough. 🔥

But be warned... 👇

You don’t want it to be TOO hot either.

Use a HOT dry iron, and that should help your freezer paper stick to your fabric!

The freezer paper needs enough heat to grip the fabric properly.

I also love using a wool pressing mat because it helps hold heat longer and makes the freezer paper stick even better.

When it comes to the quilting techniques, sometimes even a tiny adjustment can make a huge difference. 🙌

Freezer Paper Piecing Tip number ONE! ⬇️ We’re st Freezer Paper Piecing Tip number ONE! ⬇️

We’re starting off strong with one of my absolute favorite things about the freezer paper piecing technique.

And it’s that you can reuse your foundations!! I’ve had a foundation that I used 20 or more times... 😅

I know it doesn’t seem possible, but this is proof that it is!

Why make a new foundation for every single block when you just reuse ONE for them all?

That’s the magic of freezer paper piecing. ✨

Follow along for the rest of my tips that make paper piecing way easier, and comment ‘FREE’ if you want to sign up for my free class! 💌

You know what I think a lot of quilters need more You know what I think a lot of quilters need more of? 👇

Small wins. 🧵✨

Not every project has to be a king-sized quilt that takes six months to finish. Sometimes the most joyful sewing happens when you sit down, make something fun in an afternoon, and actually get to enjoy the “ta-da!” moment quickly.

That’s exactly why I’m so excited to be co-hosting the Fast-N-Easy Quilters Paradise Summit this month.

We’ve gathered 30 incredible quilting teachers to share projects that are creative, approachable, and genuinely doable. Think:

👉 Scrappy projects
👉 Gift-able makes
👉 Home décor
👉 Bags
👉 Coasters
👉 Mini quilts
👉 Freezer paper piecing

And so many techniques you can immediately use in your own sewing room. It’s free, it’s online, and it’s packed with inspiration.

It’s like a week-long quilting retreat without leaving your house. 😉

Comment ‘SUMMIT’ to get your free ticket! We kick off next week! 🎟️
