Introduction and Outline {Modern Triangle Medallion Quilt Along}

Modern Triangle Medallion· Modern Triangle Quilts· quilt along

30 Jun

Hi everyone!

Welcome to the introductory post for the Modern Triangle Medallion Quilt Along! I have been sitting on this design since December and I am SO excited to work together with you on this beauty!

In this post you’ll find the general materials you’ll need to make the entire quilt. You’ll also find an outline of our QAL timeline, color options, and sizes and prizes.

Materials

Book

Modern Triangle Quilts (Yes you will need to buy the book to participate!) The book, has all the instructions and templates and patterns for each triangle block. We’ll be working from the Right Triangle Section, on pages 59-72. The quilt pattern for the Modern Triangle Medallion is not in the book, but we’ll be working through the pattern during our quilt along!

Printables and Planning Sheets

This Quilt Along is free apart from the cost of the book, but I do strongly recommend you join my newsletter friends so that you can access the Bonus Printables. This week I have 7 pages for you including coloring pages and yardage calculators so you can figure out how much yardage you need if you want to tweak the colors or the size of your quilt. I’ve worked really, really hard on these printables, so there is a lot of added value here!

Yardage

I used Kona Cottons, but you can use whichever solid or print you love! I’ve provided a few color options f0r you below, but you are welcome to do whatever piques your fancy. My version of this 80” x 80” quilt uses a lot of colors and fabric.  Below you’ll find the yardage I used in roughly the order I used each. Some of the yardage is used in multiple weeks. FYI, the Bonus Printables break down the yardage by week if you are interested. And again there’s also a Yardage Calculator in the printables.

Here’s what I used:

Dark Blue (Kona Pacific): 1/2 yard
Blue (Kona Malibu): 1/2 yard
Lt Blue (Kona Robin Egg): 1/2 yard
Lt Green (Kona Pool): 1/4 yard
Bt Blue (Kona Lagoon): 1/4 yard
Dk Green (Kona Caribbean): 1/2 yard
Sea Green (Kona Breakers): 1/2 yard
Dk Bl-Green (Kona Celestial):1/4 yd
Lt Blue Green (Kona Aqua): 1/4 yard
Bt Green (Kona Cypress): 1/4 yard
Purple (Kona Brt Peri): 1/2 yard
Dk Purple (Kona Regal): 1 yard
Lt Purple (Kona Thistle): 1/4 yard
Md Purple (Kona Amethyst): 1/4 yard
Orange (Kona Nectarine): 2/3 yard
Peach (Kona Creamsicle): 1/2 yard
Mustard (Kona Yarrow): 1/2 yard
Burnt Orange (Kona Cedar): 1/2 yard
Red-Pink (Kona Honeysuckle): 1/2 yard
Coral (Kona Watermelon): 5/8 yard
Dark Red (Kona Sangria): 1/2 yard
Pink (Kona Pink Flamingo): 1 and 1/8 yard
Red Purple (Kona Purple): 1/2 yard
Dark Berry (Kona Berry): 1/4 yard
BtPink (Kona Pomegranate): 1/2 yard
Pale Peach (Kona Flesh): 1/2 yard
Berry (Kona Cerise): 1/4 yard

Paper Piecing Supplies

We’ll be using the following paper pieced Triangle Blocks: 12, 15, 16, 11, 18, more 15, and more 12. The Paper Piecing foundations can be found on the pattern pullout pages of Modern Triangle Quilts. You can use your favorite paper piecing method, but may I suggest my favorite method? Check the tutorial out here.

Color Options

I chose my colors to match my Panache fabric, because rainbow (duh!) and because I love these color! Let me show you a few other color ideas I tinkered with. (Psst! The Bonus Printables (see below) have coloring pages and yardage calculators so you can experiment with color. How about that deal? You get to play with color, I’ve done all the math!? Not too shabby!)

How about a Green, Blue, and Peach version? This one uses a peach and a range of 6 blues and greens.

Or a monochromatic, blue version? This one uses a range of 9 blues.

Timeline

Here’s our schedule! I’ll be updating this post with links as we move through the summer. So you can bookmark this page to revisit.

Available Sizes

The entire medallion is a big ole’ mama. She’s is gorgeous, but in case you don’t want to make a 80” x 80” quilt you have 2 options. You can make a smaller 48” x 48” quilt or make 16” x 16” pillows or minis.

This throw sized (48” x 48”) uses blocks from Week 1 – 3.

Bonus Printables

All the templates, patterns, instructions, etc can be found in Modern Triangle Quilts. The instructions in the book were written to cut and make 1 of each triangle block. I’ll be offering adapted cutting instructions and some adapted piecing instructions to my Newsletter Subscribers and quilt shop owners as a bonus. So glad I took your Right Triangles class in Savannah at Quilt Con!! Not that I have any kind of advantage, but they were awfully fun to make. This quilt is beautiful. I’m hoping I can keep up or at least not fall too far behind. Thanks for this Rebecca, it’s awesome!

Okay, so I’m completely over the moon with this quilt! Just ordered my book, running out to pick up some Kona cotton for the first block. Have a question: Do you happen to have this in Electric Quilt by chance (or, did you draft this in Adobe Illustrator?) I would like to try to change up some of the really pink pinks to more of a violet, and add a bit more orange. It really helps to do that either in Electric Quilt or in AI. Hoping you might have that? So awesome, love this quilt to pieces. Going to be a surprise gift for my daughter!

If your freezer paper is not sticking to your fabric, your iron might not be hot enough. 🔥

But be warned... 👇

You don’t want it to be TOO hot either.

Use a HOT dry iron, and that should help your freezer paper stick to your fabric!

The freezer paper needs enough heat to grip the fabric properly.

I also love using a wool pressing mat because it helps hold heat longer and makes the freezer paper stick even better.

When it comes to the quilting techniques, sometimes even a tiny adjustment can make a huge difference. 🙌

We’re starting off strong with one of my absolute favorite things about the freezer paper piecing technique.

And it’s that you can reuse your foundations!! I’ve had a foundation that I used 20 or more times... 😅

I know it doesn’t seem possible, but this is proof that it is!

Why make a new foundation for every single block when you just reuse ONE for them all?

That’s the magic of freezer paper piecing. ✨

You know what I think a lot of quilters need more You know what I think a lot of quilters need more of? 👇

Small wins. 🧵✨

Not every project has to be a king-sized quilt that takes six months to finish. Sometimes the most joyful sewing happens when you sit down, make something fun in an afternoon, and actually get to enjoy the “ta-da!” moment quickly.

That’s exactly why I’m so excited to be co-hosting the Fast-N-Easy Quilters Paradise Summit this month.

We’ve gathered 30 incredible quilting teachers to share projects that are creative, approachable, and genuinely doable. Think:

👉 Scrappy projects
👉 Gift-able makes
👉 Home décor
👉 Bags
👉 Coasters
👉 Mini quilts
👉 Freezer paper piecing

And so many techniques you can immediately use in your own sewing room. It’s free, it’s online, and it’s packed with inspiration.

It’s like a week-long quilting retreat without leaving your house. 😉

One of my latest quilts that I now have back from One of my latest quilts that I now have back from the quilter! 😍

It’s so hard to pick a favorite when you love them all, and they are so unique, but if I HAD to choose, this one would be pretty high on my favorites list! 🤭

If you’ve been around for a while, you know that I am a sucker for a good rainbow color palette, and the white background really makes the colors pop. 🌈

The Aurora has also been one of our most made quilts inside the Make Modern Triangles Club, so I think it’s safe to say that this is a member favorite, too.

Inside my block of the month programs, we go step-by-step with PDFs and video tutorials, so you don’t have to worry about missing a thing.

And yes, even a brand-new quilter can follow along and make this quilt! If you want to make your very own Aurora, comment ‘AURORA’ below and I’ll send you the details! 💌
