QuiltCon 2017 Recap

Hi guys!

I’m back from QuiltCon and have recovered just a little bit. I’ve caught up on laundry and unpacked all my quilts and all that fun stuff.

Thank you to all who came out to take workshops with me. I had such a wonderful, busy time at QuiltCon. I taught 4 workshops and didn’t leave near enough time to see the city. I thought I would share a recap here.

One of the best things about teaching is how people interpret your ideas. The cool thing about the sampler triangles from Modern Triangle Quilts is the blocks aren’t confined to the 11 patterns included in the book. There are so many triangle quilts out there. It was really cool to see how students and small groups designed quilt layouts.

 

Facets

I taught 2 sessions of Facets, an Equilateral Triangle Sampler. Each session was a 3-hour class, so we made triangle blocks and briefly touch on how to sew triangles together into a quilt. For each class I demoed using the Trimming Template and my favorite paperless piecing technique.

This workshop was a 6-hour session, so we had a bit more time to play. In the morning we spent the time making blocks. As with the other workshops, I demoed using the Trimming Template and my favorite paperless piecing technique. Then after lunch we did a group exercise where we broke into 4 groups. Each group used the triangle sampler blocks completed in the morning to build different quilt layouts. The fun thing about Modern Triangle Quilts are all the quilt layout possibilities. So we played with those a bit. Definitely a challenge, but fun.

The American Dream: Story Telling Through Abstraction

This class is a fun one. We are using stories, real or fiction, as prompts to sculpt groupings of meaningful triangles. The first part of class we talked about different design elements we can manipulate to illustrate various themes. I used one of my only-slightly-crazy science fiction ideas to demonstrate the idea. Then we made triangles! And as with the other workshops, I demoed using the Trimming Template and my favorite paperless piecing technique.

After lunch, we came back and worked on a similar group activity. We broke into 4 groups. Each group was challenged to create a quilt layout that told a story using triangles. We had some wonderful ideas.

The other incredible thing I get to share, is that my Equilateral Sampler quilt won 2nd prize in the Minimalism category. Wow! That was really cool! This is my first quilt show win ever, yippie!

We are back home, and Bruce Wayne the Wiener Dog is sleeping it off… until our next big adventure.
