Meet Carole Lyles Shaw – Featured Playful Color Artist

Featured Artist· Playful Color

3 Sep

Do you know Carole Lyles Shaw? Well you should! I’m honored to introduce Carole, a modern textile artist who most definitely quilts in color!

Each month, inside the Playful Color Quilt Guild, I interview a guest artist to share a new perspective on the creative process. Members also get a look at a different creative color style! In a world where anything is possible, it’s refreshing to see a new perspective open up and stir our creativity!

This month’s featured Playful Color artist is very special because she just so happens to also a member of our community inside the Playful Color Quilt Guild! Meet Carole Lyles Shaw!

Carole is known for her bold use of color and designs full of chunky, modern shapes. In our conversation we talk about how she thinks about color and how she approaches creating art. (Members, log in here.)

About Carole:

Meet Carole Lyles Shaw

Carole Lyles Shaw is a quilt designer, author and workshop teacher. Carole started quilting over 20 years ago when she decided to make quilts for her nieces and nephews. Though largely self-taught, Carole was generously mentored by the heirloom quilters in her first guild, the African American Quilters of Baltimore.

She co-founded the Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild and served on the Board of Directors of The Modern Quilt Guild from 2015-2017. Carole authored Madly Modern Quilts and Patriotic Modern Quilts. She also writes a line of modern quilt patterns.

Her modern quilts have been juried into several shows, including the Modern Quilt Guild Showcase at the 2018 International Quilt Festival in Houston; QuiltCon 2019; American Quilter’s Society QuiltWeek in Paducah (September 2018); MidAtlantic Quilt Festival 2019; Modern Quilts: Redesigning Traditions at the Ontario California Museum of History and Art (2016) and the Modern Quilt Guild Exhibit at the Texas Quilt Museum (2016). Her quilts have been published in many books and magazines, and exhibited in museums and galleries in the US and internationally.

I loved visiting Carole’s Instagram site. Lots of inspiration and posts I can relate to. Especially the one where she removed a binding that didn’t work and labeled the post ” know when to walk away”. Very relatable post.

Carol, Simply love your colour choices used in your quilts. Would love do attend one of your courses but unfortunately impossible in today’s Covid climate. I cannot even fly or drive interstate here in Australia so an international flight is out of the question. Stay safe, regards Pat.

We’re starting off strong with one of my absolute favorite things about the freezer paper piecing technique.

And it’s that you can reuse your foundations!! I’ve had a foundation that I used 20 or more times... 😅

I know it doesn’t seem possible, but this is proof that it is!

Why make a new foundation for every single block when you just reuse ONE for them all?

That’s the magic of freezer paper piecing. ✨

Small wins. 🧵✨

Not every project has to be a king-sized quilt that takes six months to finish. Sometimes the most joyful sewing happens when you sit down, make something fun in an afternoon, and actually get to enjoy the “ta-da!” moment quickly.

That’s exactly why I’m so excited to be co-hosting the Fast-N-Easy Quilters Paradise Summit this month.

We’ve gathered 30 incredible quilting teachers to share projects that are creative, approachable, and genuinely doable. Think:

👉 Scrappy projects
👉 Gift-able makes

It’s so hard to pick a favorite when you love them all, and they are so unique, but if I HAD to choose, this one would be pretty high on my favorites list! 🤭

If you’ve been around for a while, you know that I am a sucker for a good rainbow color palette, and the white background really makes the colors pop. 🌈

The Aurora has also been one of our most made quilts inside the Make Modern Triangles Club, so I think it’s safe to say that this is a member favorite, too.

Inside my block of the month programs, we go step-by-step with PDFs and video tutorials, so you don’t have to worry about missing a thing.

And yes, even a brand-new quilter can follow along and make this quilt! If you want to make your very own Aurora, comment ‘AURORA’ below and I’ll send you the details! 💌

I can’t believe I’m even saying this. 🫣 I have ha I can’t believe I’m even saying this. 🫣

I have had messages from people claiming that my designs and quilts are AI-generated.

In a world full of AI these days, I get that we have to be skeptical and diligent. But we can also credit and appreciate artists and creators who do amazing work.

It’s not fair to artists and creators to simply assume that something is AI-generated. I spend countless hours on each of my designs, and it takes months of days spent in the sewing room in my little creative cave to make one of the beautiful, handmade quilts! And beyond all of that, I truly enjoy the process and the journey of it all.

That’s just not something that AI could do.

So I’m here to assure you that none of my patterns or programs are AI-generated, and never will be.

And if you want to join a community quilters that sew together every single month, I invite you to join us in inside the Make Modern Triangles Club and meet all of the amazing quilters inside.

We’re just getting ready to start a brand new block of the month, and i’m really, really excited about this one. ✨

I’ve been teaching quilting for over a decade, and I’ve been teaching quilting for over a decade, and I’ll still remember the first time that I learned this. 👇

It completely changed my quilty life, and I’ve never looked back!

At one point early on in my quilting days, I almost gave it up altogether because I was so frustrated with ripping tiny bits of paper out of my seams.

My fingers hurt, it took forever, and I was over it! I still have unfinished blocks that have paper on them from those days... 😅

And then someone taught me what I have now taught thousands of other quilters, and I fell back in love with it all over again.

You can try for yourself by taking my free class and see how you like it!

Comment ‘FREE’ and i’ll send you the link to sign up! 💌

I’ll die on this hill... 👇 Quilting is not just a I’ll die on this hill... 👇

Quilting is not just about making something beautiful.

It’s about making time for yourself.

And that act of making time for yourself is something that you have to do. It’s essential. And above all, you deserve it! 👏

No one is going to make the time for you. You have to prioritize time for yourself to play and explore your creativity.

What’s the quilting hill that you will die on? Share in the comments! ⬇️
