Introducing the Splendid Sampler 2: Block 2 Milk and Cookies

quilt along

21 Jun

Hello and welcome!

I am SO pleased to be a part of the Splendid Sampler 2 Designer Group. The Splendid Sampler is a wildly popular sampler and community sewing event hosted by non other than Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson.

The original Splendid Sampler was such fun, Pat and Jane decided to do it again. And lucky me, I get to be a part of it.

If you are new here, let me introduce myself. I’m a textile artist, teacher, and artist. I love working with color and helping my students learn to play with color. My favorite types of quilts are classics and improv designs – anything with a repeating shape motif. I’m an American expat living in The Hague, Netherlands with my family (husband, 4 kids, and Bruce Wayne the Wiener Dog) for the next few years. We hail (hale?) from Houston and St. Louis.

Ok, enough about me, back to the Splendid Sampler! The book doesn’t ship until October, but instead of waiting for the sewing to begin, Pat and Jane decided to release 20 blocks ahead of time. And these first 20 blocks are free! Woot Woot!

May I present my block? This is Milk and Cookies, inspired by my favorite treat and least favorite drink! Hey now, I like milk … in my coffee! Ha!

Head here for the free download of my Milk and Cookies block.

And here’s my block I made up in a solid version.

Each block in the Splendid Sampler series finishes at 6” square. My block combines Half Square Triangles, wedge piecing, and appliqué.

Ok, ya’ll out there that swear they aren’t the appliquéing type… Let me be the first to tell you… SAME! Appliqué was on my “I will never” list, but you know what they say. Never say never! It’s true!

Anyhoo, there are just some shapes that are easier to appliqué than to piece. But, let me just tell you I am a complete beginner! My stitches aren’t perfect and my lines aren’t perfect. I assume I’ll get better with practice? Ha!

I hope you’ll give appliqué a try with me.

Here’s all my blocks so far… Block 1 and Block 2. I’m using a really dreamy blue green, coral, and mustard palette. I love these colors! If you’d like to follow along with me, follow me on Instagram.

Important Dates

  • June 14th – Sew Along started with one block released each Thursday.
  • November 1st – the 20th block is given out.
  • December 6th – We start sewing from the book with blocks announced on Thursdays. You’ll need to purchase the book to continue the sewing fun.
  • May 2nd is the planned end date. So it’s a full year of sew along fun!

Head over here for complete details of the Splendid Sampler 2 Sew Along.

Where to get the book:

Pre-Order the Splendid Sampler 2 and Order the original Splendid Sampler on Amazon:

Or ask at your Local Quilt Shop.

How to Participate:

You too can sew along. Every week, a new block will be released on the Splendid Sampler website. You can sew along and add your block to the linky party.

Give us all your Appliqué Tips!

So, please please tell me and everyone else, all you appliqué pros out there, what are your top tips for appliqué? Next time I might try this trick from Sarah Fielke.

New Quilter I have a not appliquéd. I hate the word asume, but since you’re directions say to do a blind stitch around the outside circle of the wedge pieces does that mean you’ve turned it under first as if appliquéing it down? Thank you for your help, Cindy Nelson.

I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapp I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapped up in a project or wanting to finish by a certain deadline, that we forget to just play. 🙌

Triangle blocks are especially fun for playing with!

Because the same exact blocks can look completely different depending on how you arrange them.

All of a sudden, you’re not just following a pattern anymore, you’re creating something unique. 🪄

And I think that’s where a lot of the joy in quilting lives.

Not in getting it “right” or making it perfect, but in letting yourself be curious.

Letting yourself try something, change it, try something else, and be a little playful instead of precise.

Some of my favorite quilts didn’t come from a perfectly planned layout… 👇

They came from standing at the wall, thinking, “Wait… what if I try it like this instead?” 👀

So if you have a few triangle blocks sitting nearby, take a little time to play with them and see what kind of pattern they end up in.

Comment ‘TRIANGLE’ if you want to take my free class where I teach you how to make a modern triangle, and give you a block pattern to start sewing. 💕

This time of year in the sewing room is always so This time of year in the sewing room is always so lovely.

We FINALLY get to have the windows open, the world outside is getting colorful again, and the extra daylight is a big bonus.

This is my recipe for a PERFECT April sewing day...

✨ Self care: plan meals/snacks for eating right & getting your exercise (booooooo! I know, I know.) Maybe a fun wee treat tho!?

✨ Entertainment: if it’s just you, get your show/ sporting event/ audible, etc. Or if you’re with your quilty buds, you know what to do! Sew, gab, laugh!

✨ Something you’re excited to sew: latest bingeable project at the ready!? Latest fabric stack that arrived in the post? Or...finally get that WIP d.u.n!

✨ Essential responsibilities taken care of: feed the dog, respond to that time-sensitive email, dinner for the fam? Take care of what you must get done so you can check out more completely.

Finally, set a timer for your hard stop time.

I set my alarm for when I need to pick up my kiddos from school. That way, I can get carried away by my creativity and indulge in “me” time!

Shut the laptop, check out, it’s sew time! 🧵 Everything else on your to-do list can wait. It is time for you!

If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s exactly what I’d do: ⬇️

👉 Find a community of quilters to connect with, learn from, and grow with. People who cheer you on, celebrate your blocks, and make you want to keep going!!!

👉 Make it easier on yourself with freezer paper piecing. This technique completely changed my life. I wanted to give up on quilting altogether at one point before I found freezer paper piecing.

It’s not that you don’t finish quilts…

It’s that you don’t have the right support or the right process yet. 🧵✨ Comment ‘FREE’ to take my free class, learn the freezer paper piecing technique, and get invited to join an amazing community. 💕
