Week 2 {Modern Triangle Medallion Quilt Along}

Modern Triangle Medallion· Modern Triangle Quilts· quilt along

12 Jul

Welcome to Week 2 of the Modern Triangle Medallion Quilt Along! This week we are amping up our triangle making, by making 16 total triangles blocks from Modern Triangle Quilts.

Remember you are always free to set your own pace. I know I am blazing through the quilt along, but rest assured these posts will remain up on my website for the foreseeable future. And, If you do want keep up, I will have some prizes to hand out at the end in September. Woot woot!

If you’re new to our quilt along, take a few moments to go back to the Introduction Post where you’ll find all the pertinent information about the Modern Triangle Medallion Quilt Along. You’ll also be able to get the introduction printables, which have coloring pages and planning sheets. People have found them to be very helpful. So I don’t want you to miss out!

Heads up! I have a modified paper piecing foundation for Triangle Block 15 in the Bonus Printables, which you can access below or in the BHQ Resource Library. So you most certainly want to download that bonus before you prep your materials this week. I found the modification to be really, really helpful in my own piecing.

Okey doky, let’s jump right into Week 2…

Materials

  • Modern Triangle Quilts
  • Sea Green (Kona Breakers): 1/4 yard
  • Dark Green (Kona Caribbean): 1/4 yard
  • Lt Blue-Green (Kona Aqua): 1/4 yard
  • Dark Blue-Green (Kona Celestial): 1/4 yard

Make Triangles

All triangle blocks patterns are from Modern Triangle Quilts.

  • 16 of Triangle Block 15 (page 71) (Remember I have a modified foundation, access it below!)
  • 16 of Triangle Block 9 (page 69)

PS! Don’t forget to check out my paperless paper piecing tutorial. Total game changer!

Block Assembly

Once you have the Triangle Blocks made, it’s time to sew them together into square blocks.

First, lay out the triangles blocks according to the picture above. The four Triangle Block 15’s should be in the center with the four Triangle Block 9’s on the outer corners.

Next, you will sew Block 15 and Block 9 into square pairs, or Half Square Triangles, as shown in the picture above. For the upper right and lower left units, press the seams toward Triangle Block 15. For the lower right and upper left, press the seams toward Triangle Block 9.

Sew the units into rows. Press the seams to one side.

Piece the rows together to finish the square block. Press the seams as desired. Make 4 of these Week 2 blocks.

Social Media Sharing and Playing

Instagram: Remember to use this hashtag #MTMquiltalong on Instagram. Due to changes in the Instagram algorithm, I’m more likely to see your post if you tag me @bryanhousequilts. Commenting with the @bryanhousequilts or #MTMquiltalong doesn’t guarantee that I’ll see it. (Why Instagram! Why you gotta be changin’ all the time!?) But if you tag me, I should be able to see your post!

Show your work: This week share your progress and any finished blocks!

Bonus Printables

All the templates, patterns, instructions, etc can be found in Modern Triangle Quilts. The instructions were written to cut and make 1 of each block. I’m offering adapted cutting instructions and some adapted piecing instructions to my Newsletter Subscribers and quilt shop owners as a bonus.

Subscriber family you will find the bonus resources for the quilt along here in the BHQ Resource Library. Or click here and receive the “Week 2” printables, including the modified paper piece foundation for Block 15, delivered directly to your inbox.

I didn’t receive an email today that block 2 was up and ready. I didn’t receive one last week either. When I tried to re-sign up for your newsletter it said that I was already signed up. I found out about today’s quilt block first on instagram then on your blog post. I guess I’ll just have to be more vigilant on Wednesdays and visit your website or make sure I look for your blog posting.
I was in your class at Quilt Con, and it was awesome. Good luck on your move to Holland, so jealous!

      Hey Mary!

You know, I hadn’t planned on setting it up as an automatic email, but it makes sense to do so. (You aren’t the only one who mention this!) I *think* things have settled down a bit with my move, so I *think* I could implement this starting in Week 3.

Thanks so much for your kind words! They are appreciated! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapp I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapped up in a project or wanting to finish by a certain deadline, that we forget to just play. 🙌

Triangle blocks are especially fun for playing with!

Because the same exact blocks can look completely different depending on how you arrange them.

All of a sudden, you’re not just following a pattern anymore, you’re creating something unique. 🪄

And I think that’s where a lot of the joy in quilting lives.

Not in getting it “right” or making it perfect, but in letting yourself be curious.

Letting yourself try something, change it, try something else, and be a little playful instead of precise.

Some of my favorite quilts didn’t come from a perfectly planned layout… 👇

They came from standing at the wall, thinking, “Wait… what if I try it like this instead?” 👀

So if you have a few triangle blocks sitting nearby, take a little time to play with them and see what kind of pattern they end up in.

Comment ‘TRIANGLE’ if you want to take my free class where I teach you how to make a modern triangle, and give you a block pattern to start sewing. 💕

This time of year in the sewing room is always so This time of year in the sewing room is always so lovely.

We FINALLY get to have the windows open, the world outside is getting colorful again, and the extra daylight is a big bonus.

This is my recipe for a PERFECT April sewing day...

✨ Self care: plan meals/snacks for eating right & getting your exercise (booooooo! I know, I know.) Maybe a fun wee treat tho!?

✨ Entertainment: if it’s just you, get your show/ sporting event/ audible, etc. Or if you’re with your quilty buds, you know what to do! Sew, gab, laugh!

✨ Something you’re excited to sew: latest bingeable project at the ready!? Latest fabric stack that arrived in the post? Or...finally get that WIP d.u.n!

✨ Essential responsibilities taken care of: feed the dog, respond to that time-sensitive email, dinner for the fam? Take care of what you must get done so you can check out more completely.

Finally, set a timer for your hard stop time.

I set my alarm for when I need to pick up my kiddos from school. That way, I can get carried away by my creativity and indulge in “me” time!

Shut the laptop, check out, it’s sew time! 🧵 Everything else on your to-do list can wait. It is time for you!

If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s exactly what I’d do: ⬇️

👉 Find a community of quilters to connect with, learn from, and grow with. People who cheer you on, celebrate your blocks, and make you want to keep going!!!

👉 Make it easier on yourself with freezer paper piecing. This technique completely changed my life. I wanted to give up on quilting altogether at one point before I found freezer paper piecing.

It’s not that you don’t finish quilts…

It’s that you don’t have the right support or the right process yet. 🧵✨ Comment ‘FREE’ to take my free class, learn the freezer paper piecing technique, and get invited to join an amazing community. 💕

One thing that will NEVER get old with freezer paper piecing... ⬇️

The number of blocks I can sew from just ONE foundation! 🙌

It always amazes me, and it’s one of my favorite things about the technique.

I save so much time not having to make a new foundation for every single block, and that’s not to mention the time saved from not having to rip the paper bits of those foundations out of the seams. ✨

I’m hosting a free class where I teach you this technique, and give you a modern triangle block pattern to start sewing!
