Like many of us, I love to make things because these homemade things are more than just “things”. They are tangible gifts of my love. It’s been a while since I’ve made my son, now nearly 6 years old, something from his mama. For nearly a year, he’s been hearing me tell him all about how I’m going to make him something or finish that quilt for him, yada, yada, yada. He’s probably beginning to believe I don’t mean it.
Well. I made him something! Mommy victory!
When I saw the Legendary quilt pattern by Elizabeth Hartman, I knew the floor pillow version would be perfect for my boy. He’s nearly reading, and a comfy floor pillow would be just the ticket. I showed it to my son, and of course he loved it! (I’m happy to say that I showed it to him only a few months ago, which isn’t really that long in quilting time.)
For one week, I spent a couple of hours a day working on his pillow. I told all the kids, “Let me finish this part, and then we can go to the pool.” Usually the promise of the pool bought me some time. That little bit of “summer sewing” can be so refreshing for us mamas. Especially before packing up the gear and slathering on the SPF!
A patchwork tree and our napping Doxie for scale (and cuteness factor!). His name is Bruce Wayne and he’s almost 6 months old. 🙂 And though he is a miniature dachshund, the block is huge! The tree itself is around 18 inches, I believe.
The Big Foot part was a doozy. It took a couple of afternoons. But this clever block, is so worth the time!
For quilting, I chose random crosshatching. It’s such a fun, and easy quilting pattern. And it’s really forgiving, you don’t have to mark anything. You just quilt lines! Very low key and enjoyable.
Finally! The payoff. Something squishy for my little man. Gosh I love him!
Note to self: Continue making things for these blessings.

He will love it for a long time – I just gifted my 25 yr old son the quilt and he was thrilled.

Thank you Linda! It’s good to know boys don’t outgrow getting gifts from their mamas. 🙂
