Bulletproof {Quilt Top}

Uncategorized

18 Apr

Hi there!

A few weeks few months ago, you may have noticed me working on this quilt, which I named Bulletproof, over on my Instagram account. Well I thought I’d document the quilt top here too.

Photo Jan 13, 1 42 10 PM

I can’t remember exactly when I created this sketch, but it’s been sitting in my computer for at least a year. I was waiting for the perfect fabric I guess. When Alison Glass came out with her Indigo Handcrafted fabric, I knew the tones of blue would be perfect. In fact, I had sketched the quilt in blue so I didn’t need to alter anything.

I started with a half yard bundle of these deep blue lovelies. This picture shows a bit of my process in choosing which colors and which triangle segments of the fabrics would be ideal to show the design and color transition necessary for this quilt. Typically, I use my design wall to get the colors just right before moving forward. It’s kind of a slow process, the interchange and experimentation, but it’s worth it.

After much auditioning and recutting, I finally decided on the exact colors. Everything here is un-pieced, except the 4 corner units.

I love how blue these fabrics are. They just radiate!

I’m just about the sew the rows together in this picture. Here’s a trick I rely on a lot when piecing triangles or similarly angled pieces. See those dog ears? The little triangles of fabric sticking out?

Photo Jan 28, 1 44 48 PM

I use those dog ears to help align my seams. After aligning the dog ears, I double check that my points are meeting. Then I pin and sew. I’ve found it works pretty well! I typically will trim the dog ears after piecing if I have light fabric that would show the dog ears or need to reduce bulk for quilting.

Here’s a shot of all the pieces ready to sew together.

I wasn’t quite sure the quilt would work. It’s one of those pieces that you never know until you try. With all those triangles, there was a good chance that the pieces with triangles would drift bigger.

Here’s the last step and where I’m going to find out if my plan worked. Yes, those are y-seams at the corners. But there’s *only* four y-seams. Gulp!

And here’s the final quilt top. I think it lays pretty flat, yah! I guess we’ll see for sure when I go to load it on the long arm. I’m going to leave it octagonal, but I might sew corners on to make it square only to make it easier to load and quilt on my long arm.

There you have it! My Bulletproof quilt top, which measures around 54” square. This is the perfect quilt design for me, it’s colorful and a bit risky. A great combination to get my mind engaged. 🙂

I love the tip about the dog ears. But what I really like is the process from sketch to completion. I think it’s something a lot of us don’t understand or ‘get’ and it helps when we decide to be bold and design our own.

Perfect fabric choice! And a perfect quilt! I’m going to use the dog ear tip, thanks for sharing that! This is going to be so gorgeous especially after quilting. Great name choice too!

OMGosh! I followed your lead from your Facebook page and even though I was already in love with the quilt before reading the post; I am far more in love with it now because I know how much you are loving it and how important it was for everyone of those seams to meet and match perfectly for you. Most of the time I do not worry about the seams like that, yet a pattern like this, I would be petrified and have to talk myself into trying to get the first stitch taken. LOL.

You however, did a magnificent job and each seam did match up perfectly. I do love your tip about the dog ears! Thank you for sharing that great tip and all of the remaining information about yourself and what you encountered and felt about this quilt. It truly is a very inspirational post! Have a fantastic creative day!

So I uh... well, you see... inspiration hit, and I So I uh... well, you see... inspiration hit, and I designed and made a new Block of the Month quilt!

I know, I know... crazy?!

TOMORROW, I'll be revealing the design and walking you through the color choices and all that fun "new project planning" stuff!

Behind the scenes, I'm extra excited because I did the quilty math on the rainbow version, and it turns out we can use fat quarters!

A fat quarter-friendly project just makes choosing fabrics so easy! Fat quarters are like potato chips, you can't just have one... you simply collect them. 🧐

So, if you're like me! You probably have quite a collection of fat quarters. 🌈 🥹

I'll be making this new quilt design alongside you, using my collection of Alison Glass fabrics.

This BOM quilt is more challenging than my other BOM quilts, but still totally doable. Of course, the primary technique will be freezer paper piecing, so you can brush up on your skills in my "Scrappy Whirligig" class. Comment 'FREE' to take the class! 💌

I'm so proud of this quilt, and I cannot wait to show it to you! 🤩 If you want first dibs on the new Block of the Month program, comment 'FIRST' to add your name to the "first dibs" wait list, and I'll be sure you are the first to know when sign-ups are open! 🫶

Yes, you read that right! 🙌

I have been working behind the scenes on ANOTHER block of the month pattern, and you’ll finally be able to see it on May 1st!

And get excited, because this one is completely new and unlike any I have ever released before. I think you’re going to love it. 🤭

I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapp I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapped up in a project or wanting to finish by a certain deadline, that we forget to just play. 🙌

Triangle blocks are especially fun for playing with!

Because the same exact blocks can look completely different depending on how you arrange them.

All of a sudden, you’re not just following a pattern anymore, you’re creating something unique. 🪄

And I think that’s where a lot of the joy in quilting lives.

Not in getting it “right” or making it perfect, but in letting yourself be curious.

Letting yourself try something, change it, try something else, and be a little playful instead of precise.

Some of my favorite quilts didn’t come from a perfectly planned layout… 👇

They came from standing at the wall, thinking, “Wait… what if I try it like this instead?” 👀

So if you have a few triangle blocks sitting nearby, take a little time to play with them and see what kind of pattern they end up in.

Comment ‘TRIANGLE’ if you want to take my free class where I teach you how to make a modern triangle, and give you a block pattern to start sewing. 💕

This time of year in the sewing room is always so This time of year in the sewing room is always so lovely.

We FINALLY get to have the windows open, the world outside is getting colorful again, and the extra daylight is a big bonus.

This is my recipe for a PERFECT April sewing day...

✨ Self care: plan meals/snacks for eating right & getting your exercise (booooooo! I know, I know.) Maybe a fun wee treat tho!?

✨ Entertainment: if it’s just you, get your show/ sporting event/ audible, etc. Or if you’re with your quilty buds, you know what to do! Sew, gab, laugh!

✨ Something you’re excited to sew: latest bingeable project at the ready!? Latest fabric stack that arrived in the post? Or...finally get that WIP d.u.n!

✨ Essential responsibilities taken care of: feed the dog, respond to that time-sensitive email, dinner for the fam? Take care of what you must get done so you can check out more completely.

Finally, set a timer for your hard stop time.

I set my alarm for when I need to pick up my kiddos from school. That way, I can get carried away by my creativity and indulge in “me” time!

Shut the laptop, check out, it’s sew time! 🧵 Everything else on your to-do list can wait. It is time for you!

What are you working on for a perfect April sewing day? ⬇️

👉 Find a community of quilters to connect with, learn from, and grow with. People who cheer you on, celebrate your blocks, and make you want to keep going!!!

👉 Make it easier on yourself with freezer paper piecing. This technique completely changed my life. I wanted to give up on quilting altogether at one point before I found freezer paper piecing.

It’s not that you don’t finish quilts…

It’s that you don’t have the right support or the right process yet. 🧵✨ Comment ‘FREE’ to take my free class, learn the freezer paper piecing technique, and get invited to join an amazing community. 💕
