Envelope Clutch {Busy Girls Sews Blog Tour}

Uncategorized

8 Jun

Hi there! I’m so happy today to show you what I’ve made from Heidi Staples‘ new book:  Sew Organized for the Busy Girl.

I decided to make the Envelope Clutch in the larger Art Pack size. I’ve been wanting to make something similar for ages!

Before I show you my project, let me tell you a little bit more about the book. The book is filled with short and sweet little projects for us busy gals. Knowing that finding time to sew can be a challenge for busy girls (and guys!), the book is also full of organizing strategies. Heidi’s goal is to make your sewing and your space flow so that you can stop and start effortlessly.

There are tips and tricks from industry professionals sprinkled throughout the book.  What I think is really neat is the way that Heidi has allowed space through the “Busy Girl Takes Action” pages. These pages feature open ended questions and prompts that allow the reader to think of ways that benefit the specific reader most. There’s even a place for you to write down your answers. You can nearly hear Heidi coaching you as you think through the questions.

So for example, I had forgotten my organizing boxes. I’ve been organizing my projects like this for years, but I’d forgotten this trick – maybe it was the move or the kids? But I totally forgot! As I started working on my project from Sew Organized for the Busy Girl, I was completely overwhelmed by the clutter on my work table. After reading through the book, I remembered my project boxes. So here’s how I typically organize my current projects:

Project organization

I felt much better, once I set all that aside. It’s so hard for me to enjoy a project when I’m surrounded by clutter.

To do lists

One other thing I like to do is keep a running list of my very most important “to do” lists. So I have this square chalkboard with my “to dos”. I’m almost ready to clear it and write down a whole bunch of new to dos. The 2 post-it notes on the bottom of my chalkboard have my “to dos” for the summer before school starts back up again. Does anyone else do the thing where you make your to do list but then finish a different chore and then add that finished chore to the to do list just so you can check it off? Yeah, I do that. I do that quite a bit.

Ok, now for the project.

Today's project #fabric

I chose one of the fabulous canvas prints from Cotton & Steel’s latest collection releasing in July: this is an apple print from Melody Miller‘s Picnic fabric. The top is an old favorite American Jane (I heart American Jane). Of course I have a red, polka dot fabric on hand. And some light blue herringbone. I think that’s Joel Dewberry’s (correct me if I’m wrong)?

Typically, I shy away from anything not quilty related which is just plain silly as making this project was a nice change. The project was easy and it didn’t take me very long at all, maybe 3-4 hours. It could have taken a shorter amount of time but I had to pause for hear my Netflix. 🙂

I made one small change: I just made it shorter. It’s supposed to finish at 15 1/2” tall, but I made mine a tad shorter at 14”.

I’m out of practice making non-quilty things though. One thing I forgot to do was to audition the placement for the velcro. And I missed! So I had to unpick the velcro and I’ll have to resew it. So the velcro you see, might just be glue-basted for now (oops!).

And there it is and there is a daughter right on cue asking to have it. Silly girl. 🙂 Maybe for a back to school project?

If you are a busy gal (guy) and like to get organized, I’m pretty sure you would enjoy this book. I for one am going to keep on getting organized. Last week, I took my email inbox down to zero for the first time EVER. It felt ever so good. So I’m on an organizing kick! What else can I organize?!

Thanks for reading guys! And thank you to Heidi for having me! Congrats on the book – it’s lovely!

The fabric used is very nice. My daughters tell me I enjoy the organizing as much if not more than the project I am working in.

Oh, I love this! And even better, I have been thinking I could use something like this at work, but it hadn't occurred to me to make it myself. When I saw the original photo and name, I thought it was just another bag. Nope. Way smarter. Thanks!

Neat idea. I too write those extra things on my list so I can cross them off. I even add things like drink coffee, pet the cat – that way I know I will get to cross something off!
I hopped over from sew can she – and will be exploring more, I'm seeing lots of fun stuff!

So I uh... well, you see... inspiration hit, and I So I uh... well, you see... inspiration hit, and I designed and made a new Block of the Month quilt!

I know, I know... crazy?!

TOMORROW, I'll be revealing the design and walking you through the color choices and all that fun "new project planning" stuff!

Behind the scenes, I'm extra excited because I did the quilty math on the rainbow version, and it turns out we can use fat quarters!

A fat quarter-friendly project just makes choosing fabrics so easy! Fat quarters are like potato chips, you can't just have one... you simply collect them. 🧐

So, if you're like me! You probably have quite a collection of fat quarters. 🌈 🥹

I'll be making this new quilt design alongside you, using my collection of Alison Glass fabrics.

This BOM quilt is more challenging than my other BOM quilts, but still totally doable. Of course, the primary technique will be freezer paper piecing, so you can brush up on your skills in my "Scrappy Whirligig" class. Comment 'FREE' to take the class! 💌

I'm so proud of this quilt, and I cannot wait to show it to you! 🤩 If you want first dibs on the new Block of the Month program, comment 'FIRST' to add your name to the "first dibs" wait list, and I'll be sure you are the first to know when sign-ups are open! 🫶

Yes, you read that right! 🙌

I have been working behind the scenes on ANOTHER block of the month pattern, and you’ll finally be able to see it on May 1st!

And get excited, because this one is completely new and unlike any I have ever released before. I think you’re going to love it. 🤭

I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapp I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapped up in a project or wanting to finish by a certain deadline, that we forget to just play. 🙌

Triangle blocks are especially fun for playing with!

Because the same exact blocks can look completely different depending on how you arrange them.

All of a sudden, you’re not just following a pattern anymore, you’re creating something unique. 🪄

And I think that’s where a lot of the joy in quilting lives.

Not in getting it “right” or making it perfect, but in letting yourself be curious.

Letting yourself try something, change it, try something else, and be a little playful instead of precise.

Some of my favorite quilts didn’t come from a perfectly planned layout… 👇

They came from standing at the wall, thinking, “Wait… what if I try it like this instead?” 👀

So if you have a few triangle blocks sitting nearby, take a little time to play with them and see what kind of pattern they end up in.

Comment ‘TRIANGLE’ if you want to take my free class where I teach you how to make a modern triangle, and give you a block pattern to start sewing. 💕

This time of year in the sewing room is always so This time of year in the sewing room is always so lovely.

We FINALLY get to have the windows open, the world outside is getting colorful again, and the extra daylight is a big bonus.

This is my recipe for a PERFECT April sewing day...

✨ Self care: plan meals/snacks for eating right & getting your exercise (booooooo! I know, I know.) Maybe a fun wee treat tho!?

✨ Entertainment: if it’s just you, get your show/ sporting event/ audible, etc. Or if you’re with your quilty buds, you know what to do! Sew, gab, laugh!

✨ Something you’re excited to sew: latest bingeable project at the ready!? Latest fabric stack that arrived in the post? Or...finally get that WIP d.u.n!

✨ Essential responsibilities taken care of: feed the dog, respond to that time-sensitive email, dinner for the fam? Take care of what you must get done so you can check out more completely.

Finally, set a timer for your hard stop time.

I set my alarm for when I need to pick up my kiddos from school. That way, I can get carried away by my creativity and indulge in “me” time!

Shut the laptop, check out, it’s sew time! 🧵 Everything else on your to-do list can wait. It is time for you!

What are you working on for a perfect April sewing day? ⬇️

If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s exactly what I’d do: ⬇️

👉 Find a community of quilters to connect with, learn from, and grow with. People who cheer you on, celebrate your blocks, and make you want to keep going!!!

👉 Make it easier on yourself with freezer paper piecing. This technique completely changed my life. I wanted to give up on quilting altogether at one point before I found freezer paper piecing.

It’s not that you don’t finish quilts…

It’s that you don’t have the right support or the right process yet. 🧵✨ Comment ‘FREE’ to take my free class, learn the freezer paper piecing technique, and get invited to join an amazing community. 💕
