Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day {Spring 2014}

Uncategorized

12 May

Updated with the Winner: Lucky number 168 was my winner! Congratulations Alexis! Thank you to everyone who entered! I can’t believe there were over 1,000 entries. So fun! Thanks guys.

—–

It’s hard to believe it’s Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day again! I’ve been so busy with my book (pinches self!) I hardly noticed the time flying.

Botanics roll-ups, by Carolyn Friedlander

But I do have some luscious fabric to giveaway. I admit I bought this pair – a roll up of Carolyn Friedlander’s Botanics fabric and her coordinating solids in a skinny strip roll up – for the amazing color story.

What draws you to fabric? Is it the color or the pattern? For me it’s all about the color!

To Enter:
1) Leave a comment! I love hearing from you and usually will do my best to continue the conversation via email (probably not for this post I hope you understand!).

2) Leave one (please!) additional comments letting me know you are a new follower or an existing follower (via Bloglovin’, Instagram, Pinterest, Email, etc.).

The giveaway is open to everyone and will remain open until May 16th at 5:00 pm. If you enter, be sure I can contact you if you win!

Buena suerte mis amigos! Buena suerte!

For me it's color and pattern… simple, modern, usually two-colored fabric only (or solids!!). My best friend and I are working on a rainbow quilt together. We pick one color per month and make 2 squares with just that color (and white). Then we keep one and send the other to our friend. At the end of the year we will each have an identical quilt! Thank you for the chance to win. These fabrics would work perfectly in our quilt!! <3

I want to say it's the color that grabs me, and sometimes it is. But then I walk in a shop and I see a cute pattern with words all over it, or baby chickens, or cute little dots and then it's the pattern that calls my name. Hmmmm, if something is calling my name I might be hearing voices. I think I have a split quilting personality. 🙂 blessings, marlene

I'm definitely a colour person! I'm really loving all the modern quilts that contrast solids with patterns.

  141. wipgirl says

    May 12, 2014 at 5:56 pm

I'm usually drawn in by colour first and then the pattern – if it's in a colour that doesn't work for me, I'm probably not going to care how interesting the pattern is (though I have made exceptions in the past…)

  142. Kristin says

    May 12, 2014 at 6:04 pm

In general, I'm drawn to the color first (especially if I'm looking at shelves of fabric in a store) and then I look at the pattern.

  143. Allison says

    May 12, 2014 at 6:05 pm

Hmmm..they kind of go hand in hand, don't they? I'd say color first but a cool pattern might make me change my mind! Thanks for the chance!

  144. Taya@TypeB says

    May 12, 2014 at 6:08 pm

It's usually color, which is why my stash had been so blue-heavy 🙂 I've been trying to even it out, but pattern size is also important to me for whatever reason. I love, love Carolyn Friedlander's aesthetic though – color and design! Thanks so much!

I think, for me, color is just as important as the pattern. They have to complement each other in such a way that inspires me!

  148. Kathleen says

    May 12, 2014 at 6:21 pm

I like neutrals, for color I tend to like muted stuff. Pattern is good too though!

  149. Elizabeth says

    May 12, 2014 at 6:21 pm

I think color gets me to even approach a fabric, then the pattern helps decide if I like it. I'm not a huge fan of the color orange, so I rarely approach it. (Though there are a few patterns that overcome the orange!)

Love the rolls! Thanks for offering such a neat prize!

I definitely look at color — I like what they call "modern colors," nothing dusty or mottled — but I have to say I look at pattern more, I think. I have pretty strong feelings about pattern. That said, I'm highly suggestible, so I can even *hate* a print and then change my mind when I see it used nicely, and usually in a way I hadn't even considered before. Botanics was love at first sight, though — thanks for the chance!

  200. thecrunchyfrog says

I love patterns and the way a particular color really brings out what is neat about the pattern. I tend to be very spatially oriented, so I notice the over all pattern before the color.

Thank you for being a part of this Sew Mama Sew giveaway and hoping to win this stunning strip rollup. What a beautiful way to add to your stash.

Mark your calendars... I am revealing a BRAND-NEW Mark your calendars... I am revealing a BRAND-NEW block of the month design on May 1st! 🗓️ ✨

I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapp I think as quilters, we sometimes get really wrapped up in a project or wanting to finish by a certain deadline, that we forget to just play. 🙌

Triangle blocks are especially fun for playing with!

Because the same exact blocks can look completely different depending on how you arrange them.

All of a sudden, you’re not just following a pattern anymore, you’re creating something unique. 🪄

And I think that’s where a lot of the joy in quilting lives.

Not in getting it “right” or making it perfect, but in letting yourself be curious.

Letting yourself try something, change it, try something else, and be a little playful instead of precise.

Some of my favorite quilts didn’t come from a perfectly planned layout… 👇

They came from standing at the wall, thinking, “Wait… what if I try it like this instead?” 👀

So if you have a few triangle blocks sitting nearby, take a little time to play with them and see what kind of pattern they end up in.

Comment ‘TRIANGLE’ if you want to take my free class where I teach you how to make a modern triangle, and give you a block pattern to start sewing. 💕

This time of year in the sewing room is always so This time of year in the sewing room is always so lovely.

We FINALLY get to have the windows open, the world outside is getting colorful again, and the extra daylight is a big bonus.

This is my recipe for a PERFECT April sewing day...

✨ Self care: plan meals/snacks for eating right & getting your exercise (booooooo! I know, I know.) Maybe a fun wee treat tho!?

✨ Entertainment: if it’s just you, get your show/ sporting event/ audible, etc. Or if you’re with your quilty buds, you know what to do! Sew, gab, laugh!

✨ Something you’re excited to sew: latest bingeable project at the ready!? Latest fabric stack that arrived in the post? Or...finally get that WIP d.u.n!

✨ Essential responsibilities taken care of: feed the dog, respond to that time-sensitive email, dinner for the fam? Take care of what you must get done so you can check out more completely.

Finally, set a timer for your hard stop time.

I set my alarm for when I need to pick up my kiddos from school. That way, I can get carried away by my creativity and indulge in “me” time!

Shut the laptop, check out, it’s sew time! 🧵 Everything else on your to-do list can wait. It is time for you!

What are you working on for a perfect April sewing day? ⬇️

If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s If my WIP pile was getting out of control… here’s exactly what I’d do: ⬇️

👉 Find a community of quilters to connect with, learn from, and grow with. People who cheer you on, celebrate your blocks, and make you want to keep going!!!

👉 Make it easier on yourself with freezer paper piecing. This technique completely changed my life. I wanted to give up on quilting altogether at one point before I found freezer paper piecing.

It’s not that you don’t finish quilts…

It’s that you don’t have the right support or the right process yet. 🧵✨ Comment ‘FREE’ to take my free class, learn the freezer paper piecing technique, and get invited to join an amazing community. 💕

One stitch at a time!!! 🪡 Sometimes, a few hours One stitch at a time!!! 🪡

Sometimes, a few hours (or days) in the sewing room just makes it all alright. 🙌
