Fabric stashing and thinking optimistically

Uncategorized

13 Feb
It’s a rainy, gloomy Monday here today. I was going to run a few errands today, but I’m a weinie and just wanted to go home instead. So here we are. I needed batting to baste a quilt, but it looks like I’m going to have to piece a few odd sized batting remnants together. It’s cheaper anyways, right?
Let’s see… you want to see what fabric stashing looks like for me? If I don’t have a specific project in mind for a fabric, my modus operandi has been to buy tone on tone fabrics or solids. Like these. I need more green and yellow in my general stash. These colors seem to be lacking in my stash and are more challenging for me to work with, further complicating my green and yellow stash deprivation.

Free Spirit Solid in Yellow and Saffron, Put a Lid on It in Green and Yellow,  Tiny Elephants in Lemon Yellow
Of course, now I want the prints in all the other colors. But I’m trying to show restraint. And now I want to make a quilt entirely with greens and yellows, but that would mean buying more fabric. And again, I’m trying to show restraint. 🙂
Now, want to see fabric hoarding? That’s when I love a fabric and have to have it but don’t have a specific purpose for it yet. Now, I only consider it a problem when it just lingers in my stash hoard because I love it so much I’m afraid to use it. 🙂

A few of my favorites from Sherbet Pips
I found a shop with Aneela Hooey’s Sherbet Pips line and I picked out my favorites. Because I love this line. And have little restraint. Ok I had a little restraint in that I only bought half-yards. Although I wish I bought a yard of the aqua puppies.
In any case it was lovely to get those packages in the mail last week.
Now off to patch some batting together and baste and quilt a quilt. Hopefully I can get it done this week? Too optimistic? Maybe. I have that problem too.
But if I finish, I can start a new project!

It's always a struggle with fabric. So often I buy prints because I love them, but then I'm afraid to actually use them for fear that I'll ruin them. I have to work on breaking the fabric codependency cycle… 🙂

I definitely share your fear of actually using the fabrics you love! I've started stashing some designer lines and I'm REALLY nervous about cutting into them! 🙂

Tip number five... Score your seam lines before sewing!

I use a ruler and scoring tool to lightly crease the fold lines on the freezer paper.

Why? Because crisp folds = crisp seam guides.

And crisp seam guides = much more accurate triangle points 😌

I’ve been teaching quilting for a decade, and I st I’ve been teaching quilting for a decade, and I still make mistakes in every single quilt. 😅

The joy really is in the journey, but sometimes the journey is ROUGH.

It’s not all rainbows and butterflies in the sewing room like it may seem.

While this quilt did turn out beautifully, and I’m SO happy with it, it didn’t come without its fair share of mistakes!

But that’s just a part of the quilting journey that we learn to love, too. ✨

Always print your templates at 100% scale.

Before cutting your fabric, measure the 1-inch test box on your template.

Even being slightly off can affect the accuracy of your blocks later on and lead to some BIG oopsies. 😅

This is one of those tiny steps that saves a LOT of frustration later... Speaking from experience, and more re-done blocks than I could ever count!
