Weekend Project – Amalie's Quilt

Uncategorized

20 Jul

We had planned to go to Seguin to see Bobby’s parents and Memaw this weekend. (Happy Birthday from the rest of us Memaw! We love you!) But we noticed Amalie had a fever about 30 minutes before we were supposed to leave. We decided Bobby and Cora would take the trip and Mommy and Amalie would stay home.

I took advantage of all the down time and worked on Amalie’s quilt. I was able to complete all the cutting:

I finished sewing all the lambs together on Saturday night. At the end I was ready to be finished with this step. It was late! But I had these 12 happy lamb faces to reward me when I was finished:

Then, today I was able to almost finish the quilt top:

I still have the checkerboard border to sew and attach to the lambs. Hopefully I can finish up Amalie’s quilt in the next couple of months. (Yeah, it’s not so much of a weekend project.) So far, I’m very happy with how her quilt is turning out. I love the hot pink and the brown combination. The pink fabric has white watercolor butterflies draped about. The white fabric has wee soft pink polka-dots on it. The brown fabric has swirly black dotted concentric circles.

This pattern is so easy aside from reading the directions. Also my mom and I made this quilt when I was 10ish. Cora inherited/sweetly demanded this quilt and it is one of her favorites blankies. She calls it lamb quilt and you can see it on her bed. Is it cheesy that I wanted Amalie to have a lamb quilt too?

This is a girly comment, but it worked out well that Cora inherited my lamb quilt because it works with her dark tan complexion. The hot pink lamb quilt compliments Amalie’s fair complexion.

I thought I would leave the story of how Cora fell in love with the Lamb quilt.

It was when you were in still living in St. Louis and I was baby sitting. Cora was having a hard time settling down to go to sleep, so I did want any grandma did, I rocked her. The lamb quilt lived on the rocker at that time. Each time I got Cora to sleep I would try to put her in the crib and she would awake. It was after 3-4 attempts that I got smart and saw what she was looking at, it was the lamb quilt. I asked if she wanted it, she shook her head yes. So I put her in the crib and she snuggled into the lamb quilt and to my surprise fell fast asleep with the lamb quilt wrapped around her. And that is how Cora fell in love with the lamb quilt.

There’s so much pressure on us in the quilting wor There’s so much pressure on us in the quilting world to finish what we started. 👇

But if you’re stuck staring at a stack of unfinished blocks, and it’s keeping you out of the sewing room because it’s the last thing you want to sew right now, this is the advice that I would give you.

It’s okay to put a project down for a while. 🫶

I’ve had projects and quilts that sat folded up for weeks… months… even longer. Projects I avoided because I got stuck, or lost momentum, or honestly just wasn’t in the mood to sew that anymore. AND IT’S OKAY! 🙌

Every single time I came back to them after putting them down for a while, I felt that spark for sewing again. I felt the inspiration that I started the project with, and I started ENJOYING it again. ✨

So if you have something that you’re avoiding sewing, let this be your permission slip to just put it down and know that you’ll come back to it when the time is right.

I’m not even exaggerating when I say that I probab I’m not even exaggerating when I say that I probably would have saved hundreds of hours if I knew the magic of freezer paper piecing when I first started quilting. 😅

There was a time when I almost gave up quilting altogether because I HATED paper piecing so much, and it took me so long.

Having to sew through your foundations, spend countless hours ripping paper from the seams, having sore fingers, and not even wanting to do it anymore... That’s where I was with the whole paper piecing thing. Ready to just throw in the towel.

And then a friend introduced me to Freezer Paper Piecing, and it changed my life forever. I have never looked back, and now I LOVE paper piecing. 🙌

Instead of tearing paper out of every seam, I could just peel it off… and use it again... and again... and again!

It was like magic. And it still feels like magic every time I do it! 🪄

Comment “FREEZER” if you want to take my free class and experience the magic yourself. 💕
