Mini-Wavelength {RJR Fabrics: What Shade Are You?}

finished quilts

20 Nov

If you had to be a color, which color would you pick? That’s a fancy question for “what’s your favorite color?”

My answer is (of course) ALL THE COLORS!!! Which is why for my project this RJR Cotton‘s “What Shade RU?” blog hop I chose blue and green solids.

Obviously. heh.

If you are new here, welcome. My name is Rebecca and I’m the author of Modern Rainbow: 14 Imaginative Quilts that Play with Color. In my book I use ALL THE COLORS with the purpose of discovering how to make rainbow quilts that are unique and inspired.

RJR Solids in Argento, Optical White, Neon, Grass is Always Greener,
Riviera, Putting Green, Twilight, Indigo, Bora Bora

And you may have noticed that green and blue is not ALL THE COLORS! So you might be curious why I chose such a limited palette. For this project I wanted to try something a little different. I wanted to know how the Wavelength pattern (from my book Modern Rainbow) would look with a more limited palette monochromatic rainbow.

Original Wavelength
Quilted by Angela Walters

If you follow me over on Instagram you might have seen my progress in early October. I wasn’t confident my idea would work so before wholly committing I put up a mock up of the colors on my design wall.

There are certainly times where I put an idea up on my design wall and it just doesn’t work. Happily I did like this idea once it came to life on my wall.

I couldn’t resist piecing a monochromatic back.

For the quilting I wanted to use cross hatch, but that turns out to be pretty challenging on a long arm. So instead I cross hatched in sections, creating luscious texture.

And voila. Here is the finished piece. What do you think? Does the Wavelength pattern look different with the colors in a random array? It’s so interesting how a quilt pattern can look completely different just by changing fabrics and color schemes.

Mini Wavelength, detail
Mini Wavelength, Detail

And when I say mini, it’s more of a wall hanging size. That yellow table just needed something to hang above it.

I hope you enjoyed this post. If you are interested in purchasing Modern Rainbow click here or visit your local quilt shop; if you’d like a signed copy click here.
A special thank you to RJR Fabrics for supplying the fabrics. Check out their blog to see more “What Shade RU?” posts.
And a special thank you for reading!

Triangle blocks are especially fun for playing with!
