Rainbow Streak {Modern Rainbow}

In the next few weeks, I’d like to blog about the quilts from my book, Modern Rainbow: 14 Imaginative Quilts that Play with Color. I’ll be posting about the quilts that were left out of my first round of posting last year. (It kinda makes me sad to think some of my quilts might feel left out!)

Today, I’ll be showing you this fun and bright quilt, Rainbow Streak.

Rainbow Streak, inspired by the traditional Streak of Lightning quilts and the ever popular zig-zag quilts, was completed before I submitted my book proposal by in 2013. It’s been well loved ever since! On a typical day, you can find it on our couch or as a wall for a quilt fort.

Choosing the fabrics was most fun. Using 36 different fabrics my goal was to create as seamless a rainbow as possible. So, starting with the red-purple end of the rainbow I slowly added fabric with hints of purple. Then once I hit pure purple I choose fabric with more and more hints of blue until I hit pure blue. Then I began adding fabric with hints of green. And so on. Hint: I started with around 46 different fabrics and pared the colors down.

For the quilting, I created an illusion of more streaks in the background. This is an easy straight line quilting that you (and I!) can do on your domestic sewing machine. I kept the lines organic by letting the wobbles happen. (Wobbles gonna wobble.) I also stitched in the ditch to make each rainbow streak pop.

And not to waste a chance to add more color, did you see the binding? Yes! I carried the rainbow out to the binding. So fun!

Here’s a fabric pull that one of my local shops, Janie Lou, made for a customer. It’s just gorgeous! I love this bundle!
