When I first started bed rest, a few dear friends offered to bring me quilting magazines to look at. I declined their offers because knowing myself, I would look at them and get fired up to make something new. Except that I wouldn’t be able to make something new for a while. So I was aiming for the disciplined route by not even window shopping.
Maybe I should have taken up the magazines because now I have new hobbies that I want to try. Hobbies! Each one with projects and new tools.
1) Furniture making/ wood working – I can’t even tell you how I stumbled upon this hobby. Oh yes, pinterest. Shoulda stayed off pinterest. In any case it should come as no surprise to you that I enjoy making. I remember playing alongside my dad in the basement while he tinkered upon a wood project. I can’t remember what it was. I’d guess a dresser for me because I remember a beautiful white drawer pull with pink and blue flowers painted on it. He’d let me play with hammers and nails and wood when I was six or so. Man, I remember smashing my thumb trying to hold those nails to hammer them!
If I thought I could I’d love to be more handy, but I’d always thought as a girl I was limited by my lack of man strength. After seeing this site, I’m rethinking my views. And I think I’d like to try my hand at making something substantial out of wood. Sometime. I did build a dollhouse last year…
So it still needs a door and yes that is a dirty sock |
2) Stamp making – Another hobby I’ve been wanting to try. I’ve seen some very cute stamps on fabric projects. This hobby might come first because the materials are cheaper than power tools.
3) Gardening – I’ve tried in the past to grow things with limited success. This hobby will need to wait until we get a new house. Instead of pining for my Northern favorite flowers (I’ll never forget you peonies!), I’m going to endeavor to figure out new favorites to grow down here. I’ve lovingly petitioned my hubby for a potted Belinda’s Dream rose for mother’s day. I hope he remembers. But then again there are always power tools. (I’m the kind of girl who likes to receive things like toasters for occasions. And flowers.) I think I’d rather that rose. Ain’t she purdy?
Can you see the trouble I’ve made for myhusbandself?
I think all this laying around is making me itchy. I’m itchin’ to get up and do! Anything and everything apparently.

Forced idleness can make the mind want to fill the time. You can do any — or ALL — of those projects, just start small. (I miss peonies too — and spring bulbs — but not the cold & snow. And we have magnolias & gardenias & bouganvilla.)
