A finish: A boy named sue

Uncategorized

25 Jun
I have a finish to show ya’ll today! It feels like forever since I’ve finished a quilt. Not that I’m complaining, but lately I feel like I’ve been starting projects left and right (more on that Wednesday).
This quilt is for a baby boy, who is the son of a very dear friend. A very dear friend who wishes we would move closer. Like 900 miles closer. Unfortunately, such a move doesn’t seem to be in God’s plans. 🙁 Thankfully, we do still see each other for girl talk twice a year. 🙂 🙂
Quilt: A boy named Sue
(I don’t know why, but Johnny Cash’s song kept running through my head while making this quilt…)
A simple design pennant design, using some of my favorite colorful prints, made for a (relatively) easy project that came together fairly quickly. The quilt measures on the small side, 30(ish) inches by 40(ish) inches. A perfect, super snuggly, blankie.
I tried a new FMQ design, loose loops. I thought the quilting looked like a happy breeze running through the pennants. And the loose quilting makes it super soft and floppy (I likes the floppy).

And of course, the bestest part according to my baby boy (cars! trucks! mine!) is the back print.
*Sigh*
Can’t wait to give it to her!

Edited to add… I’m linking to Quilt Story’s Fabric Tuesday. This Linky party looks like a fun way to share! Check it!

Becca, I absolutely LOVE this quilt pattern! Did you use a tutorial for this? I'd love to make one myself!

      Thanks Heidi!

There's no tutorial that I know of. I'd say I'd write one, but I have too much going on right now. We are moving next week!

Anyways it is pretty easy. I used the banner or isosceles triangle die from accuquilt. But one does not *need* that die to cut those triangles? I used my ruler to cut some extra white triangles. I think I used the 45 degree angle on my ruler. They finish at 4.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall. So you would cut from both your white and your patterned fabric 6 inch strips and then use your 45 degree line to cut the triangles every 5 inches.

Then you sew your white and patterned triangles together. Then sew into strips. Then when I sewed the strips together I didn't match the seams. Instead I put the point of one triangle at the middle of the triangle below it.

      Clear as mud?
      That's pretty much it

Love this!! I have to make a mini quilt with triangles for a swap and I don't fancy half square triangles so I think I will use yours as my inspiration – thank you!!!

Funny thing – you can't get a johnny cash song out of your head while making this for Finley. I too have a johnny cash song that reminds me of him and his birth – The Ring of Fire

The joy really is in the journey, but sometimes the journey is ROUGH.

It’s not all rainbows and butterflies in the sewing room like it may seem.

While this quilt did turn out beautifully, and I’m SO happy with it, it didn’t come without its fair share of mistakes!

Always print your templates at 100% scale.

Before cutting your fabric, measure the 1-inch test box on your template.

Even being slightly off can affect the accuracy of your blocks later on and lead to some BIG oopsies. 😅

This is one of those tiny steps that saves a LOT of frustration later... Speaking from experience, and more re-done blocks than I could ever count!

1️⃣ Make a test block. I know it’s tempting to s 1️⃣ Make a test block.

I know it’s tempting to skip this step... I cannot tell you how many times I have skipped making a test block and ended up regretting it later. If I had just made the test block, it would have saved me HOURS and HOURS of seam ripping and re-sewing, so take my advice and just always make the test block!

I have never regretted making a test block, but I have regretted not making one. 😅

2️⃣ Celebrate the ta-da moments.

I’m not talking about just the finished quilt. I mean EVERY moment along the journey that feels like a win. Picking your colors and fabrics, sewing that first block, the points that line up, arranging blocks onto the design wall... Celebrate as much as you can along the way.

I think too many quilters rush past these moments because they’re just focused on the finish line, but quilting isn’t one big “ta-da!” It’s a bunch of little “ta-da” moments stitched together.

3️⃣ Learn the freezer paper piecing technique.

I’m not kidding when I say it completely changed my quilty life... The more I quilt, the more I realize that frustration doesn’t make a quilt more valuable. Struggling doesn’t make you a better quilter. A good process gives you more confidence, helps you enjoy the sewing, and frees up a lot of your time to keep quilting. It makes you want to come back tomorrow and sew another block!

Quilting is meant to be enjoyed and there’s so much to learn along the way. These three things have been HUGE along my quilting journey, and I know they can make an impact on yours too.

What’s one thing that has completely changed your quilting journey? Share in the comments. ✨
