Hi there! Today, I’m sharing some little projects completed over the past month or so. These are the types of projects I share right away on Instagram with the intention of taking proper pictures later. But these things were meant to be loved and have appropriately been squirreled away by myriad girls. (I guess I need a boy project!)
While at QuiltCon in February, my friend Deirdre scored the cutest cut and sew dolly from Spoonflower. I knew it would be a perfect gift for my soon-to-be seven year old daughter for her birthday. As soon as I got home I ordered one for myself, er I mean Cora.
I chose Scarlet from stacyiesthsu. Stacy has lots of other cute cut and sew dollies and I will definitely order another dolly for future occasions. Cora had a blast cutting, pinning, and sewing up her dolly and declared “this is the best birthday ever!” (Score one for me!) It was a simple and instantly gratifying way to introduce her to real sewing on the real sewing machine.
My mom stuffed Scarlet on our way to the beach and then? Little girl perfection.
Next, I sewed up a little lovey blankey for my littlest girl. While on Spring Break I notice she would cuddle with softies and blankies, especially when sleepy. Who can resist a cuddly baby? I thought she should have something mommy-made for Noelle to cuddle with at bed times. Her blankie is made with voile from Valori Wells’ Nest collection. I used flannel in between layers of voile for a soft cuddly and warm finish.
And finally, Easter dresses. You know what? I’m feeling the pressure of my daughters’ advancing youth. Not that they are getting old, but Cora at least is definitely approaching the time in her life where mommy-made things maybe aren’t that special or desired. And the two older girls have been requesting dresses for a long while. Not wanting to miss my chance to make them dresses, I made them dresses for Easter.
I experimented with new seams on my machine (Janome 6600) and found an overlock seam to be perfect. It stitches the seam while zig zagging the allowances together for a polished look. Now garment making will be a little easier!
These dresses are based off the peasant dress tutorial by “Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom.” This tutorial has sizes for 18 months to 7. I made a few alterations by lengthening the sleeves and adding a light ruffle at the bottom. Fabrics are Dancing Paisley in voile by Amy Butler and a voile solid in Mist.
And there you have it. Any suggestions for a boy project? I don’t know if I need one, he’s happy with anything with wheels!
