Hi guys! QuiltCon is 1 month away!
I’ve gotten several questions about my QuiltCon class supply lists, which probably means I wasn’t as clear as I should have been. So I thought I’d stop by the blog and write up a post covering some of the most Frequently Asked Questions. Which I hope will be helpful.
In general I broke down each supply list into 2 categories: Supplies you’ll need to bring and Workshop Prep you’ll need to complete, preferably before class.
Supplies:
Here’s what I listed in the Supply List:
- Basic Workshop Supply Kit as recommended by QuiltCon
- Modern Triangle Quilts: 70 Graphic Triangle Blocks 11 Bold Samplers (Stash Books, 2017) (FYI – I anticipate being able to ship copies purchased from my shop Wednesday or Thursday.)
- Half-yards of 5 different colors of your choosing
- Template Plastic
- Any Paper Piecing Supplies that you might want
Pictured above are the supplies you might need to purchase: Template Plastic, Modern Triangle Quilts, and fabric (yah!). Just a few thoughts on the fabric. A general rule of thumb in the book is that in each quilt I used roughly 1/2 yard of each color. So depending on how many colors you’d like to use, the amount of fabric you bring will fluctuate. In my picture I’m showing lots of fabric options to complement my orange and teal palette. Of course, you may choose several colors and in that case Fat Quarters may work. It’s good to have some options, but I understand packing might be tight.
In my supply list I ask you to bring a “Basic Workshop Supply Kit as recommended by QuiltCon”. I have to apologize here, I thought QuiltCon was going to publish a general supply kit. I must have misread something somewhere. I’m sorry!
What notions should you bring? So, you’ll want to bring your favorite sewing supplies. Keep in mind that sewing machines, irons, ironing boards, and cutting mats are provided in each classroom.
The picture above is an example of what I might bring to a workshop. A rotating cutting mat, 6” x 12” acrylic ruler, rotary cutter, thread, snips, scissors, seam ripper, fabric marking pens, pins, and a pen and pencil. Note that I will be providing the supplies for Freezer Paper Piecing. I’ll be providing you enough to make 1 block. So, you might want to bring your favorite paper piecing notions if you plan to paper piece more blocks.
I will have a few copies of Modern Triangle Quilts available onsite, but it would be best to purchase the book beforehand so that you can complete the prep work listed below.
Workshop Prep:
To make the most of your class experience, before class please:
- Identify 4 sampler blocks you want to incorporate into your quilt
- Cut the fabric needed for the 4 blocks you identified – You’ll be cutting from the 1/2 yards of fabric you’ve already picked out to bring to the class. Cutting instructions are found in the book. For example, if you want to make Equilateral Block 20 those cutting instructions are found on page 36.
- Prepare the Trimming Template(s)
- Prepare any paper piecing templates for the blocks that you know you want to use (note that I will be providing the Freezer Paper Samples)
- (For the American Dream workshop) Cut 5-10 Isosceles Base Blocks
In the picture above I’ve shown an example of what you might prep for the Facets A and B workshops.
At the very minimum, if you are running out of prep time, if it’s the only thing you can do for class, prepare the Trimming Template using the Quilter’s Template Plastic and make copies of the Pattern Pages from the back of the book.
Once you have the templates and copies made, choose at least 4 blocks you want to make during class. I’ve circled my choices on the worksheet (which you will get in class!) at the bottom right. At the top left in the picture you can see some fabric I’ve cut to make the 4 blocks I chose. Remember the cutting instructions are found in the book. I like to organize my fabric pieces on stacked paper plates. It helps me stay organized and as a bonus, it travels well.
