I’ve been wanting to make a quilt as you go (QAYG) Traveling in Circles Tote for quite sometime. When I found myself with a few more scraps of Florence, Denyse Schmidt‘s newest fabric line coming out in just a few long weeks, I knew now was the time.
The QAYG panels were fun to make. Using duck canvas as the backing, I used Elizabeth Hartman‘s tutorial for making quilted patchwork panels for a structured bag. Then I trimmed them down to the sizes listed in my tutorial. The rest was kind of intimidating. π
I’m fairly pleased with the result, but it is not for the faint of heart. If I make another QAYG version, I likely wouldn’t use duck canvas as a base. And I would grade the seams. But it is a nice sturdy, purdy bag.
I made a few other changes to my tutorial: 1) I added only one zippered pocket for the top, and 2) I added elastic to the inside side panel pockets.

This one is destined for my mother-in-love’s birthday present, but after a break I think I’ll make another for myself. They’re just so darned handy and cute.

This is fantastic! I am LOVING the Florence, and I'm so glad because I didn't like Shelburne Falls (at all). And it was such a sad time. But now I am happy again!

Just curious , what do you mean by "grade the seams"? This is super cute and I'll give it a try soon!
