Aurora BOM in rainbow colors fulfilled a dream that all started in Texas, where I became smitten, enchanted, and off the hook in love.
I’m talking about lone star quilts, ya’ll. When I lived in Houston, Texas for a spell, I saw lone stars everywhere, ON EVERYTHING. I fell in love with them and wanted to use that love to create a modern triangle quilt using my “Build-a-Shape” recipe. Adding a rainbow or a gradient is the cherry on top!
In this post I’m sharing my inspiration and quilt-making process for the Aurora BOM in rainbow colors aka my lone star version.
DESIGN INSPIRATION
When I design a quilt, I use my “build-a-shape” recipes. It’s like having my own language using triangles. (I guess I speak Triangle?) It’s like having special ingredients for a top secret sauce recipe. But I’m sharing the secret!
Take a look at the Aurora coloring page. See how the triangles are rotated to make a four-point star? I’ve used this configuration before in my Sparkler BOM but it’s hidden treasure in Aurora.

Here it is again in the Sparkler BOM quilt in hot pink and dark teal.

Here’s the full Sparkler quilt. I paired it with a yellow stripey triangle to form a block section.

I especially love medallion, radial (round) and star quilt pattern designs. Aurora turned into all three types, depending on how you look at it.
Because I like messing around with color, I created four different rainbow palettes to help members think outside the rainbow.
The first one, the cover girl, is the main rainbow palette version.

From left to right in the top row, Main Rainbow and Autumn Rainbow.

And in the bottom row, Spring Rainbow and a multi-color version without a name.
You might think four are enough to choose from. Nope. Wait til you see what our Make Modern Triangles Club members cooked up on their own coloring pages next week. They should be the quilt designers – you’ll be amazed.
So next week, as part of my 4-part Trunk Show Tuesdays series, I’m sharing my planning process for Aurora. How we start the block of the month lays the groundwork for finishing the quilt. I’ve tested and revised this process over the years – we’ve got it down now so that members stay on track for their big tada moments.
Happy quilting!
Rebecca
