If you had to be a color, which color would you pick? That’s a fancy question for “what’s your favorite color?”
My answer is (of course) ALL THE COLORS!!! Which is why for my project this RJR Cotton‘s “What Shade RU?” blog hop I chose blue and green solids.
Obviously. heh.
If you are new here, welcome. My name is Rebecca and I’m the author of Modern Rainbow: 14 Imaginative Quilts that Play with Color. In my book I use ALL THE COLORS with the purpose of discovering how to make rainbow quilts that are unique and inspired.

And you may have noticed that green and blue is not ALL THE COLORS! So you might be curious why I chose such a limited palette. For this project I wanted to try something a little different. I wanted to know how the Wavelength pattern (from my book Modern Rainbow) would look with a more limited palette monochromatic rainbow.

If you follow me over on Instagram you might have seen my progress in early October. I wasn’t confident my idea would work so before wholly committing I put up a mock up of the colors on my design wall.
There are certainly times where I put an idea up on my design wall and it just doesn’t work. Happily I did like this idea once it came to life on my wall.
I couldn’t resist piecing a monochromatic back.
For the quilting I wanted to use cross hatch, but that turns out to be pretty challenging on a long arm. So instead I cross hatched in sections, creating luscious texture.
And voila. Here is the finished piece. What do you think? Does the Wavelength pattern look different with the colors in a random array? It’s so interesting how a quilt pattern can look completely different just by changing fabrics and color schemes.

And when I say mini, it’s more of a wall hanging size. That yellow table just needed something to hang above it.

Love your idea of crosshatching in sections. I love a good cross hatch too but hadn't thought of doing it this way. Beautiful quilt!
I really like the original, but very glad you trialed the limited palette and went with it. Good choice!

Love the colours you picked. I love making minis and have added this to my list which means I pinned it!
Oh it certainly works in a more limited palette! It reminds my of mountains in the afternoon covered in shadows. The quilting looks great too – it really all works together.

Awesome quilt! Love greens and blues together, reminds me of Maui 🙂
These are lovely. I grew up by the beach in Southern Cal, and these colors feel like home. Funny–now I live in the Pacific Northwest, and these colors also look like my new home.
Shades of blue and green are definitely my favourite – I love playing around with different shades to see how it changes the design too.
I'm a sucker for rainbow colors, but what you've done with this monochromatic color scheme is stunning! And your Wavelength design is wonderful in its simplicity. You're very talented!

Very pretty colorway. I love that pattern. Thank you for the giveaway.
This is just as beautiful as the rainbow!
What a neat way to change things up, Rebecca. This mini reminds me of a Maine woods on a snowy day (reflected in an icy lake?), and it looks wonderful over that yellow table!
I would love to try the RJR solids. I love the quilting on your quilt, and the pattern looks great in the blue/green palette.
I have your book and love all the quilts in it. I think I like your Mini Wavelength even more than the original! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful design.
I'm seriously in love with the monocromatic and love how you placed it above the yellow table.
Love the colors you used. I would definitely use a turquoise in the mix.
I have got your book and have been meaning to make this quilt!
I just wanted to say that I love this! Saw it on IG, so awesome!
Adding your modern rainbow book to my Christmas wish list!
A friend just recently steered me to your website. I am so impressed with your work. It’s beautiful!!! As I get older, I’m more drawn to the vibrant colors. Can’t wait to purchase one of your books. Thanks for sharing your love of quilting.
I love the colors you picked for the new hanging.
Love this quilt. Reminds me of mountains reflected. Also love how the colors look layered!
I love blues and greens too.
I have wanted to make Wavelength for the longest time! I just haven’t gotten around to it. Then there is the question-where on earth will I put another quilt? I love the idea of a mini wavelength! That will be perfect for me for now. Approximately what size is the wall hanging?
