I’d like to share with you another quilt from Modern Rainbow: 14 Imaginative Quilts that Play with Color. This quilt is called Flame for the flame-like blocks and hung during QuiltCon last week.
Instead of making each flame block appear the same, I thought it’d be fun to make each unique by playing with tone, value, tint, and shade to create visual interest. To do that I used lots of different scraps of fabric – both rainbow colored and neutral. It was almost as much fun making the neutral “flames” as it was making the rainbow “flames”.
Instead of creating a negative space using a wide open swathe of fabric, I created negative space through the neutral flame blocks. In other words – the quilt is still gridded but the color play creates the negative space. In other words I had a lot of fun making this one.
For the quilting on this I just did an all over zigzag type of quilting. At first, I set out quilting each “flame” with individual feathers. But that did not look right, so I had to rip out lots of stitches. Took a few days! And man did my fingers hurt. But it was worth it – the zig-zags look much better.
Thanks for stopping by!

Rebecca, I love this quilt! If I may ask, what fabric did you use for the sashing?
