For a while now, I’ve admired the Double Wedding Ring (DWR) Quilts. I’ve even started a red and white one only to find what they say is true. It’s a big commitment. Frankly, a plain red and white one was kind of boring. So I abandoned it.
But I still love them. While the classic DWR is lovely, I really love the chunky, scrappy kind and perhaps with an unusual background – scrappy or dark. In considering the DWR Challenge I was looking for something a bit different. So, I drafted my own chunky, foundation paper piecing templates. And sewed up a few test rings and a block or two.
So far, I’ve only got 6 ring segments sewn. Given that I drafted the templates, I really wanted to make sure everything was fairly accurate before I committed. These are my test rings.
Here’s what the segment template looks like.
Despite, my history of a DWR false start, with lots of trepidation I cut out all my needed strips this past weekend. I’m using a favorite fabric line: my precious Katie Jump Rope bundle. I even purchased a few more hard to find fat quarters to round out the colors. That alone I think will be the carrot I need to finish. (Hopefully!)
Eek, ya’ll. I think I’m planned for 64 ring segments.
Some fabric fun:
Don’t those crosses look nice? Maybe there will be enough fabric left over to sew up some crosses.
And while I said I love the DWR classic, I may just do something a little different. Honestly, I have no idea.
I’ll be linking up to WIP Wednesday. Thanks for stopping by!
That is fantastic! A DWR is definitely on my someday list. Katie Jump Rope is the perfect fabric for it too.
They look great so far! Can't wait to see the finished product 🙂
oh wow. I started one years ago and totally flaked on it. I'd love to make one someday.
yours is looking great BTW!!!
Paper piecing what a great idea for the DWR! Too funny though as I found a pattern yesterday called Metro Rings (DWR style) that uses a curve ruler. I have two jelly rolls of Christmas fabric from a friend that are dying to be used;) I will be keeping up with your posts to see what transpires from your DWR quilt design.
CanNOT wait to see more.
they look great so far! love those fabrics. 🙂
looking amazing 🙂
Gorgeous fabrics and I think DWRs will look incredible!
Gosh, I love those crosses too! A ton of work, but it's going to be gorgeous. You are one brave lady!!
