I’ve been wanting to make a quilt as you go (QAYG) Traveling in Circles Tote for quite sometime. When I found myself with a few more scraps of Florence, Denyse Schmidt‘s newest fabric line coming out in just a few long weeks, I knew now was the time.
The QAYG panels were fun to make. Using duck canvas as the backing, I used Elizabeth Hartman‘s tutorial for making quilted patchwork panels for a structured bag. Then I trimmed them down to the sizes listed in my tutorial. The rest was kind of intimidating. 🙂
I’m fairly pleased with the result, but it is not for the faint of heart. If I make another QAYG version, I likely wouldn’t use duck canvas as a base. And I would grade the seams. But it is a nice sturdy, purdy bag.
I made a few other changes to my tutorial: 1) I added only one zippered pocket for the top, and 2) I added elastic to the inside side panel pockets.

This one is destined for my mother-in-love’s birthday present, but after a break I think I’ll make another for myself. They’re just so darned handy and cute.

Linking up to Finish It Up Friday.
You are getting some mileage from that fabric!
Let's see, my birthday is in, um, 7 months. Just saying. 🙂
Super cute and love the fabric!
Such a sweet bag and I like that you said mother in love;)
There is so much to love about this Becca. It looks great with the patchwork panels – this has been on my "someday" list since your first tutorial.
This is fantastic! I am LOVING the Florence, and I'm so glad because I didn't like Shelburne Falls (at all). And it was such a sad time. But now I am happy again!
I absolutely love this little tote! I need to make one for my EPP! And I am definitely going to have to purchase some of the Florence line when it comes out, oh my goodness it's gorgeous!
that's just gorgeous!
OH my Gosh, looove this!!!
This tote is so beautiful in Florence! I think I would have a hard time waiting to gift it!
Very cute tote. I love the QAYG method!!
I absolutely adore this, Becca! The colors, the quilting — perfection!!
Just curious , what do you mean by "grade the seams"? This is super cute and I'll give it a try soon!
